Names for the airline

edit

The official name of the ex-VIP operator in Russian is ФГУП «Государственная транспортная компания «Россия» The direct English translation is Federal State Unitary Enterprise (FGUP) "State Transport Company "Russia", however in proper usage the English translation is Russia State Transport Company.

The airline is also known (incorrectly) in English as:

  • STC Russia - STC being an abbreviation of "State Transport Company"
  • State Transport Company Russia - this is a direct English translation of «Государственная транспортная компания «Россия»
  • GTK Rossiya - this is a transliteration of «ГТК «Россия», ГТК being an abbreviation of Государственная транспортная компания, which translates to English as State Transport Company. Rossiya being the transliteration of Россия (which in English translates to Russia)
  • GTK Russia - refer to GTK Rossiya

In usage the only names which are correct are:

  • (in English) Russia State Transport Company
  • (in Russian) «Государственная транспортная компания «Россия», or «ГТК «Россия»

Any other usage is incorrect and should be avoided.

As to the name of the merged Russia State Transport Company and Pulkovo Aviation Enterprise. The merged entity is still legally known as:

  • (in English) Russia State Transport Company
  • (in Russian) «Государственная транспортная компания «Россия», or «ГТК «Россия»

However, it operates under the names:

  • (in Russian) «Россия - Российские авиалинии»
  • (in English) Rossiya - Russian Airlines, or simply Rossiya.

This is an odd case in that the translation of Россия is Russia, whilst Rossiya is the transliteration of Россия, and the airline has chosen to be known in English as Rossiya. I guess this was done as "Russia - Russian Airlines" would just sound downright pathetic.

Rossiya Airlines is basically an 'invention' of those who are unfamiliar with Russian naming conventions. You will often see in Russian where they write Авиакомпания «Россия», and this is where the mistake comes from, as only the name between « and » should be used when translating the actual name into English, however, the transliteration is being used when it shouldn't be.

Another example of this is Baltic Airlines. The legal name of the company is Закрытое акционерое общество «Авиакомпания «Балтийские авиалинии», which technically translates as Closed Joint-Stock Company "Aircompany "Baltic Airlines". We refer to this entity as Baltic Airlines, not Baltic Airlines Aircompany.

When editing this and associated articles, take into account this information as it can be a little complicated, and I will make the necessary edits as required, and will refer back to this talk page when making edits so that reverts aren't done incorrectly.

Additionally, the following pages all redirect to the Rossiya Airlines article

STC Russia, GTK Russia, GTK Rossiya, State Transport Company Russia and Russia State Transport Company

The main article Rossiya Airlines should also be moved to either Rossiya (airline) or Rossiya - Russian Airlines in the future after I have done edits and re-writes.

Rossiya (airline)Rossiya Airlines – The airline is legally incorporated as "Rossiya Airlines JSC" and also names itself like that on its website rossiya-airlines.com. So the ugly "(airline)" can be avoided. Rossiya Airlines is currently a redirect. – 46.244.157.126 (talk) 16:20, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

See previous discussion of the airline's name elsewhere on this talk page. There seems to be a non-trivial question as to what is correct, so it is best to have a proper move discussion. EdJohnston (talk) 16:41, 16 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
This is a contested technical request (permalink). A second technical request, by a similar IP, was honored. I will reverse that. Wbm1058 (talk) 17:05, 19 December 2015 (UTC)Reply
