Rostrevor is a beautiful place!!!

The sign denoting the bi-lingual name in Irish is Just wrong!! Caislean Ruairi is the better option and also easier on the eye! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 81.145.241.37 (talk) 22:50, August 22, 2007 (UTC)

NAME

I stand to be corrected, but I've always been under the impression the "Ros-" (perhaps it was originally Ross-Trevor) in the name related to the Ross family, see Robert Ross-of-Bladensburg. There do seem to be some sources suggesting this also. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.134.1.50 (talk) 11:52, 17 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

The name

edit

I've never heard or seen Rostrevor spelt with a second "s", whether on town signs, maps or ordnance survey charts, can anyone cite where that's coming from? Also the correct gaelic version of the name is not Ros Treabhair but Caislean Ruairi, or "Rory's Castle." Nilzy (talk) 12:58, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

According to the agreed Ireland manual of style all settlements in Northern Ireland will only include Irish after the name in the lede if they are derived from Irish and the derivation is provided and sourced. Rostrevor doesn't have an official Irish name like places in the Republic of Ireland. Rostrevors origin is onfusing however most sources attribute it to deriving from Rose Trevor, the wife of the areas then owner Edward Trevor - hence why it was also known as Rosetrevor.
Present-day wise, Rostrevor is used for the town, Rosstrevor for the townland and Caislean Ruairi is the old name for the townland before being renamed by Edward Trevor back around 1612. Mabuska (talk) 18:46, 2 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
