Recent vandalism Jan/Feb 2006

An anonymous user from tgp.com.au or one of their resellers has been vandalising the article in the classic quotes style. Longhair has been IP blocking in an effort to control this, unfortunately the IP(s) in question are TPG proxy servers for Southeast Queensland.

The full set of TPG proxies likely to be affected by this user are 220.245.180. 130/131/133/133/134 Alex Law 15:45, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

Have a look at this vandalism counter: [1]. It's getting out of control.

That's quite alarming! I know a lot of those reverts are mine, reverting the "comedian" edits. Also, my two cents on the "comedian" debate - Rove has a team of writers, and so do a lot of other comedians, but that does not exempt him from 'comedian' status. He delivers the jokes, and whether he's good or not is subjective - the point remains that he's one of Australia's most prominent comedians, and clearly a large section of the community believe he is funny. Call for protection

I'd like to call for a renewed temporary protection of this page, rather than the further blocking of ISP proxies. Alex Law 15:45, 26 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note Alex. Yes, let's try semi-protection. The problem with the Rove article has existed long before semi-protection was available and it did slip my mind at the time. I'll unblock the ip now and semi-protect on the next occurence of childish vandalism to this article to see how we fare in future. -- Longhair 01:07, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
If it persists a email to TPG may be in order. It's long term overly childish vandalism we see here. I've unblocked also... -- Longhair 01:11, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Many thanks, especially as the TPG floating proxy at 203.26.24.212 has just been blocked (at least I can switch back to regional)... (ARGH!) I'm definitely in favour of an email to TPG (from outside), especially as they tend to respond to access problem reports by giving info on how to point your browser at a diffeerent proxy. Alex Law 05:07, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

I enabled semi-protection today after our idiot vandal returned. Please leave a note here if you wish to see the protection lifted. -- Longhair 06:18, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
Keep the semi-protection. It's getting very tiresome. - Richardcavell 06:04, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

Vandal(s) have constantly been putting quotes around the word comedian in the first sentence. After a while I got sick of it and started banning IPs as it has been happening. I've now got to an IP shared by someone doing mostly good edits. Would anyone be opposed to temporary protection of the page? It's not a major act of vandalism but it is consistent, repeated and from many different addresses. -- Chuq 09:22, 12 July 2005 (UTC)

FWIW, I think that calling Rove McManus a comedian would constitute original research :-) Ta bu shi da yu 04:52, 14 July 2005 (UTC)

To quell these acts of vandalism you should include something about the negative points of Rove. It is true that a lot of people don't find him funny and there have been numerous accusations of him stealing other peoples comedic routines. His interviewing style has also been questioned by various tv magazines.

Its true calling Rove a comedian is not completely correct, it could be argued he is a glorified puppet, simply regurgitating material produced by his TEAM of writers. This is fact, and i believe this is the reason such widespread dislike has formed of him. Remove the protection from this page, and help maintain the integrity of Wikipedia.

Other variety show hosts have a team of writers to, but at least they make the host funny. To call rove funny is the same as calling Stalin compassionate.

From richardcavell - I'll keep clear of the argument for or against Rove being called a comedian. There are a couple of niggling errors on this page. The phrase "Rove landed a ten late night episodes of his own tonight show" is grammatically incorrect. Also, his current show has been called Rove (Live) in one part and Rove Live in another.

From Steven - First, the statement filed under the section "Other Work" which reads "When Bert Newton fell ill in early June 2005, Rove hosted his show Good Morning Australia in his place" is somewhat misleading as Gretel Killeen also hosted Good Morning Australia while Burt was ill; there may also have been other guest hosts. It would be more accurate to say Rove was a GMA guest host for only part of the time Burt was ill.

Interesting, I didn't hear about Gretel hosting it - can you provide a source and I'll update the page. -- Chuq 06:07, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Chuq, I can find no official source, short of emailing Ch10.

Second, placing a ban on the editing of Rove's page only undermines Wiki's statement "the free-content encyclopaedia that anyone can edit". Preventing derogatory remarks is one thing, but to prevent a fair and balanced analysis of the entertainer to be published only highlights one of the fundamental flaws of Wikipedia. When a hierarchy of editors is introduced which uses their own opinion to select the more accurate representation is the moment the source ceases to be free and open.

Numerous anonymous editors were adding the quotes, and after being asked why, refused to even reply or comment. This is vandalism. After the source IP addresses of the vandalism were blocked, it re-occurred from other IPs - this is persistent vandalism. The reversions were done by a number of people, admins and regular users. The fact that you are replying now shows that you do know how to reply to comments on talk pages and intentionally ignored them before.
I don't get paid to do this and I don't have time to sit around and constantly revert bored children playing games. Using Finger quotes is obviously not suitable for an encyclopaedia article. If you really are serious about writing about some of Rove's negative qualities, give an example of what you would add to the article on the talk page. -- Chuq 06:07, 1 August 2005 (UTC)
Chuq, until my above comment I have never made a post, edit, comment or any other form of contribution regarding Rove on Wikipedia. As for offering an opinion on Rove's negative qualities, it would appear there already exists sufficient data on this talk back page to do just that. However, I myself have no interest in contributing to this page; I'm sure one of the "commenters" would be able to "convert" the ""air quotes"" into "verifiable statements" with souce links.
Wikipedia is supposed to be an encylopedia (I really should put that in air quotes, ahahaha) and thus, it needs truth. Rove is not a comedian, he is a very annoying media player that has claimed ill-gotten fame and fortune. In any other country, he would be nothing. P.S. Chuq, it's not my fault that you wank off to Rove all day and night.
On my authority as a worldwide respected historian I contend that by the wealth of ancedotal evidence on hand, you cannot deny that Rove is, quite frankly, a terrible comedian, not worthy of the job title. I'm can run, but I'm not a runner. Next you'll be denying that Turkey did not in fact, murder 1.5 million Armenians during the First World War. - Yours, Professor P. Krackerbarral.
I don't enjoy the music by many pop bands - but I would still describe them as a professional musician, no matter how good or bad they are at the job - they make money from making music. Whether rove is funny or not is irrelevant, he has worked many years as a stand up comedian, hence his title is a comedian. Many people don't enjoy his comedy (including, admittedly, myself) so as stated above, it's probably worth mentioning somewhere on the page, but this quotes thing is just nonsense. -- Jeremyh 12:28, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

FWIW, The Andy Milonakis article is also suffering similar vandalism, and is currently protected also. Probably not a related issue, but worth watching to see how they handle the stupidity. -- Longhair | Talk 23:11, 8 August 2005 (UTC)

Surely comedian, like any job title, is a term which is value-neutral as to the skill, or lack of it, of the person with that title. One of the critics above even says "he's a terrible comedian". But still a comedian, no? The edits are childish. ~~LP

Labor supporter

Regarding this edit - [2] - I don't think there is a comedian in the country who hasn't done a John Howard impersonation at some stage. I thought it was pretty common for all politicians to have the piss taken out of them - the party in power, even moreso. Is it documented somewhere that Rove is a ALP supporter, or is Rove's non-unique stance of impersonating John Howard the only evidence to go on? -- Chuq 05:19, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

The whole paragraph should be taken out immediately. Who wrote this garbage? Rove's publicist? There are obvious problems with the whole article as it stands (regarding its neutrality), but this section regarding Howard and the election is reminiscent of a PR machine attempting to hype up something which in reality never occured. If Rove's show says there was alot of hype generated by a segment does that make it true? Absolutely not. This whole incident is like claiming for weeks I am going to have an in-depth interview with Osama Bin Laden, and when it doesnt happen, claim he was "chicken" or "scared" or some other rubbish, and also claim millions were waiting with baited breath. -- Anon User

I agree that the paragraph should be taken out immediately. It seems rather unsubstantiated, for starters. Furthermore, previous comment makers have correctly pointed out that government are particularly targeted. As an example, currently David Letterman's writers hammer out jokes about George W Bush yet when Bill Clinton was in power, nightly there would be jokes about the Monica Lewinsky affair.

I think the article is better off without the links reinstated by User:203.122.218.47. One is hosted by Yahoo and, when I visited, had exceeded it's bandwidth limit and was therefore inaccessible. The other didn't really have a lot of information, and looked pretty amateurish. Cnwb 05:52, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

203.122.218.47 replied to this on my talk page. I'm pasting it in here to keep the conversation in the right place. Cnwb 09:30, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

I see your point about the links. Someone had accidentally included a bad link there (the original one was quite good), and then doubled up. So I got rid of one. They might be home pages, but they list a lot of useful information about Rove McManus. The more information the better, right? Most of it is verified on Rove's official homepage, so I think that we can say that they are accurate. Maybe that is a topic for debate though. Do you need a 2nd link when on Rove's own site it says much the same things? (just a bit more difficult to find). I would just rather have more info than less. That's my personal opinion though. 203.122.218.47 09:09, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
I think it's better to have a small amount of good links than a page of average ones that the reader has to wade through. If there is information on those sites that's not already on Wikipedia, lets work towards getting it here. Cnwb 09:30, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
Agree with Cnwb. Of the three non official links there, one link (Yahoo) didn't work, one (Angelfire) was pretty basic text with a few pictures, and the other (actually a subpage of the first site, except it worked) had a long list of facts/trivia about him. I removed the first two and left the third one. Wikipedia is not a linkfarm. -- Chuq 10:41, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
As explained previously, someone had put in the wrong link for 1. The one that you deleted today was a valid link, and was not a subpage of the other one. I think it was a big mistake to delete it. Was quite useful. I referenced it with the text that I included, which was why I included it as a link in the first place. Though I suppose you could get the same info from Rove's own site, that one does it better. But I won't play edit wars here. I will wait until some common sense has prevailed.203.122.218.47 15:09, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

•Rove has been critised by numerous people because he is believed to be a racist. Evidence of this can be seen in his segents where he would continually ridicule people of ethinic descent. e.g. He has ridiculed Michael and Elise who are the only contestants of Asian descent from Big Brother 2006. Even when one of the contenstants was emotionally hurt, he would continue to ridicule them. Another example can be seen duting the live show at a viewer's house where he openly ridicules the neighbour who is of Indian decent, insinuating that the Indian-Australian man wanted to swim in the pool after a hard day's work being a taxi driver (This is a steroetype). •Rove's ego and arrogance can be observed as it gradually increases. WIn his early Rove Live career, he would interview guests with "sincerity" and would always agree with everything they say which is a undesirable trait in a way but as his popularity has grown, so has his arrogance. He now openly ridicules guests as he believes he is superior but kisses the proverbial arse of a immensely famour celebrity e.g Harrison Ford •Although Rove's ridicule of the current Prime Minister of Australia as of 2006, John Howard, is recurrent throughout his shows. Many consider Rove a hypocrite as his values reflect those of the Prime Minister of which his values Rove ridicules.

User:Rovemcmanus

Can anyone confirm that User:Rovemcmanus is Rove McManus? Has he mentioned anything on his show about Wikipedia? I've put on User talk:Rovemcmanus that this breaches Wikipedia:Username#Inappropriate usernames if they are not Rove McManus. Any way, you fellas and felleses can deal with it. --Midnighttonight please tell me off for procrastinating on my essay! 08:44, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

Rove has been criticised for allegedly stealing and plagiarising of other comedians' works, particularly from American talk show hosts Conan O'Brien, David Letterman and Jay Leno. I elliot 15:03, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

Have any of you actually watched Leno, Conan or Letterman? It's obivous that you have not, as no intelligent person would remove the above criticism if they had. Recently, Rove presented "comical" names for the new Harry Potter book. This material was taken directly from Conan. Do I also need to mention the skit where Rove superimposes his mouth over a still picture of a celebrity. This is pure unadultered plagiarism!

I have watched all three, and I do agree with the assertion to a degree (although I doubt any of those three have original skits either). The fact is, this is an encyclopaedia, and we need facts. If you cannot back up your claim with a reliable source, then it does not belong. Thankyou. --liquidGhoul 13:32, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
We have all seen Conan, Leno and Letterman, thanks to the magic of incessant repeats on Foxtel. Yes, Rove uses bits from Conan and Leno and Letterman. Conan uses bits from Leno and Letterman. Leno uses bits from Conan. Jon Stewart uses bits from Leno and Conan. The Chaser uses bits from Jon Stewart. They all use the same bits. This is called variety television and plagiarism is SOP. Don't Forget Your Toothbrush:"A memorable feature of the second season involved the audience flashing their house lights on and off at a prescribed moment. A camera in a mystery location would search for someone taking part, thus selecting them to play a game involving throwing things out of their windows.
Ring any bells?
Another feature of the show is a live video shot of an area of an Australian city. Rove then gets the residents of the area to flick the lights of their houses on and off, often in answers to questions. --218.215.130.252 11:53, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Excuse me

What is stuck up you people's arses... you ban edits like nazis just because someone posts content admitting to - and showing - that Rove is not loved by everyone. This is Wikipedia... the article can't be one-sided —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.0.106.130 (talkcontribs)

It's not one sided. I don't see any point of view stating he is great, and conversely, there should be no point of view stating he is crap. Winning awards (such as a logie) is notable. It is not up to us, as an encyclopaedia, to criticise people. If there is a notable criticism of Rove, then that can be added, with the citation. A personal blog of someone who is not notable, and the blog itself being non-natable, does not consitute a notable criticism. There is currently a notable criticism in the article (some sort of satirical awards). If you actually do some research, I am sure you can find others. But you should know that all edits are closely watched, and all unreliable citations will be removed, as we are careful when it comes to living persons. --liquidGhoul 08:28, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Articles should not have any sides to them at all. Thewizkid93\talk 18:00, 1 October 2006 (AEST)

WP:POV suggests neither positive nor negative information should be posted unless it's completely factual. Rove is a much loved Australian icon. Equally, he is despised and hated by many. This is because he's a celebrity. That happens. Plus, as with any comedian, he has a style of comedy that may not appeal to some people's sense of humour. Again, that's natural. The ackowledgement has been made that he has been voted as overrated and that there's some criticism. To say that he's racist is a tall order, considering that he has good friends as regular guests on the show who're of all cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities (Arj Barker, Stephen K. Amos off the top of my head, and others too). It's erroneous and slanderous and certainly not deserving of existence in an encyclopedia article...............................--lincalinca 05:17, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
I think that Rove is an idiot and that this page is biased in his favour. However if you can't provide sources folks then it can't go on here. Cls14 21:03, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
