gulag
editSomeone wanted a source for the "gulag" line in ST:6. It's in the script here in addition to dialogue actually heard in the movie. I don't know if the link is copyvio so I'm putting it here. Wl219 00:50, 27 January 2007 (UTC)
War and Peace
editI've read that Rura Penthe was named for a prison camp in Siberia in War and Peace, and that the warden's speech was lifted almost directly from that book. If anyone's read War and Peace, please change this and cite the book? Dbutler1986 (talk) 00:09, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- The quote is from Bridge on the River Kwai. As for the prison camp, having scoured Project Gutenberg's text version of War and Peace I can find no reference to Rura Penthe. While Nicholas Meyer is known to draw from literary themes, he and his co-writer also mention in the director's commentary that they drew from older movies as well. Based on this, I feel it is more likely that Star Trek drew from Disney's 20,000 Leagues, which is the true origin of the name.
- I am happy to be corrected though. Ricktopher (talk) 04:11, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
The commentary to STVI indicates Rura Penthe was initially conceived as a tropical/jungle type location, much in the same vein as Bridge on the River Kwai and 20,000 leagues. The Bridge on the River Kwai speech matches pretty closely with no similar speech to be found in War and Peace - at least by scanning it. Here is the part of the River Kwai speech that matches: "A word to you about escape: there is no barbed wire, no stockade, no watch tower. They are not necessary. We are an island in the jungle. Escape is impossible. You would die."--Ricktopher (talk) 07:27, 3 September 2015 (UTC)
