Minimalist interpretation of WP:MOSDAB
editMy concern is incorrect information and overtly minimalist interpretation of WP:MOSDAB. Looking at the Kpalion proposed wording:
- Rzeczpospolita, the Polish word for "republic" or "commonwealth"
- Rzeczpospolita (newspaper)
- Rzeczpospolita Polska, the official Polish name of Poland
Factually incorrect
Rzeczpospolita, the Polish word for "republic" or "commonwealth" isn't the modern definition, it is an endonym for the Polish State, which is why I suggested it should say:
Rzeczpospolita, the Polish endonym used to describe the Polish state - see Name of Poland
- Linking endonym since it is a 10 cent word that people may not be familiar with
- Linking Name of Poland since the article discusses the endonym (or self-appellation) for the Polish State.
Minimalist interpretation
Rzeczpospolita (newspaper) is very minimal and leaves the reader, IMHO, confused - what kind of newspaper? So I suggested that it should say:
Rzeczpospolita (newspaper), the largest daily newspaper in Poland in terms of circulation
At least it give minimal context to the reader to let them decide where to go.
Additional minimalist interpretation
Rzeczpospolita Polska, the official Polish name of Poland, would be slightly cleaner in English phrased as:
Rzeczpospolita Polska, the official name, in Polish, of the Republic of Poland
although one could argue that it should be
Rzeczpospolita Polska, the official name, in Polish, of the Republic of Poland
That's my 2 cents. Ajh1492 (talk) 16:07, 27 April 2011 (UTC)
- So here's my (minimalist, as you say) interpretation of WP:MOSDAB:
- "Disambiguation pages are not articles; they are aids in searching." A disambiguation page is not the right place to inform the reader that Rzeczpospolita (newspaper) is the largest daily newspaper in Poland in terms of circulation. They'll find this information in the relevant article, they just need to find. The word "newspaper" in parenthesis is enough, you don't need any further clarification.
- "Each entry should have exactly one navigable (blue) link to efficiently guide readers to the most relevant article for that use of the ambiguous term. Do not wikilink any other words in the line." That's pretty self-explanatory, but here's my interpretation anyway: don’t put more than one blue link in an entry. The reader will find links to Name of Poland, etc. on the article page; we don't need it on a disambig page. If you think a word you want use in an entry (other than the link) may be too obscure (like "endonym"), then don't use it.
- "Subject to certain exceptions (...), piping or redirects should not be used in disambiguation pages." If one of the possible meanings of "Rzeczpospolita" is synonymous with "Poland", then link Poland without any piped links. If it's not, then we need no such entry here. The only exception that applies here is to italicize the newspaper title.
- As for factual accuracy, here's what Słownik języka polskiego PWN has to say:
- Rzeczpospolita «tradycyjna nazwa państwa polskiego»
- zob. republika.
- So it has two dictionary meanings: one broader, "a republic", and one specific, "Poland". So how about this?
Rzeczpospolita may refer to:
- Rzeczpospolita, the Polish word for "republic" or "commonwealth"
- The above, used specifically in reference to Poland
- Rzeczpospolita (newspaper)
Dear colleagues in the discussion
editGentlemen, we aim simply to my previous version, with cosmetic amendments and additional explanations:
Rzeczpospolita may refer to:
- Rzeczpospolita, the Polish endonym referring to the Polish state
- Rzeczpospolita Polska, the official Polish name for the Republic of Poland
- Rzeczpospolita (newspaper), one of the largest daily newspapers in Poland
