SAIL is an acronym that stands for “Surplus d’armée imrico limité” and began as an army surplus store with a sole location is Beloeil, Quebec. It caught the attention of the three future owners, who noticed that there was a demand for high-quality outdoor products. The company was purchased by its current owners in 2004 and has continued to grow. In 2019, a distribution centre dedicated entirely to online ordering was built. The immense warehouse is equipped with a modern inventory tracking system and conveyor belts that span over 700 feet. The distribution centre allows the company to optimize order-processing time, increase the number of products in stock, and process thousands of orders per day. Although the store does sell nautical gear and equipment such as kayaks, canoes, and paddles, it does not sell sailboats. The name SAIL was kept to honour its history, and the owners felt that it represented the outdoors and the feeling of freedom that can be found in the open air. Quebec company Fonds de solidarité FTQ has supported SAIL in various projects, such as growing the network within the province of Quebec, regional expansion to the province of Ontario, helping the company make a digital shift as well as constructing the online distribution centre, and offering RRSP plans to SAIL employees.
