SS Birma in 1918
  • ... that when the SS Birma (pictured) responded to the sinking of the Titanic, the RMS Carpathia told them to "shut up"? Source: Encyclopedia Titanica

  •   Its interesting, its long enough, and its well referenced, its new. Nice idea for 14 April. QPQ done. I added an extra ref to the hook fact in the article. The image is free to use. I think I would have gone with a hook like DYK ALT1: ... that 109 years ago this photo (pictured) was taken from the SS Birma of the iceberg that had just sank the Titanic? but your hook is fine too. Victuallers (talk) 15:44, 17 March 2021 (UTC) .... 2nd thoughts ... do you need "allegedly" or most subtly the "Birma said that ..." Victuallers (talk) 15:48, 17 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Chart position

edit

The C of E, I notice that you restored the statement "but initially incorrectly charted the position as 44°41'N. 50°14'W". Would you mind pointing out to me where it states that in the provided source? Because I can't see it there. Thanks, Gatoclass (talk) 06:25, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Gatoclass: It's in the paragraph that begins "Stunned, Cannon jotted down the position". The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 12:09, 14 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Huh? That passage doesn't say he "initially incorrectly charted the position." It says he later recalled the position slightly incorrectly in a letter to his parents. And the location you gave is also incorrect. How you've managed to misread this passage on two occasions now I cannot imagine, but I'm reverting again. Conduct of the Carpathian

edit

Is there any information available on what the wireless operators of the Carpathian had to say about the accusation that they told Birma to shut up? My possibly rather superficial understanding of the Titanic sinking is that the Californian tends to be regarded as unhelpful and the Carpathian as helpful. The Carpathian article bears this out, with various assertions made about the efforts of its captain to provide assistance urgently. How is this squared with the apparent obstructiveness of the wireless operators? Are they known to have been rebuked by the captain afterwards? And a further question: how did the Carpathian even know Birma was not using a Marconi wireless and was therefore to be given the cold shoulder? Were lists kept for this purpose?
