Talk:Sabre (disambiguation)

Is it correct to call the "electronics company in the American sitcom The Office" fictional, or was it the real company Sabre Holdings that was in the fictional sitcom?71.109.156.143 (talk) 05:08, 2 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

The Ceiba Tree is pronounce like the word sabre with the "R" not pronounced. Would it be okay to included the Ceiba disambiguation link in the sabre disambiguation? I might later. Here is the Marian-Webster link for Ceiba, with it includes a link to how it sounds. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ceiba?show=0&t=1322028864 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.134.215.125 (talk) 06:22, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal with Saber (disambiguation)

edit

I don't see a strong reason to keep Saber (disambiguation) and Sabre (disambiguation) separate. There are many use cases in which a user might not know which spelling is used, especially since both are so common. Why make them look through two dab pages when one would suffice? People like Saber Abar don't belong on the Sabre page and vice versa.   Not done CapnZapp (talk) 19:43, 1 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
That may be but yet there he is. It's obvious that people in the past have felt the two spellings are similar enough that items need to appear on both lists. That's duplication of effort when a simple redirect would be more efficient and more user-friendly. I'm reinstating the merge proposals. Powers T 19:51, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Comment. I would have preferred if you reapplied for a new merge proposal since when I removed the old one you had zero feedback and no support, but whatevs. CapnZapp (talk) 22:25, 2 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Merger proposal 2 with Saber (disambiguation)

edit

(see above for rationale)

Comment. Thank you for reapplying, LtPowers. I started a new section if that's alright. CapnZapp (talk) 10:59, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Weak oppose/Conditional agreement Looking through page history, I see that the basis for your suggestion is the 04:53, 17 February 2014‎ edit by Cnilep. However, his edit comment does not signify any intention for a merge; it says "Cleanup per WP:MOSDAB using Dabfix". To me that's a boilerplate non-comment. I would like to know his/her position on the proposal.
Furthermore, "saber" but not "sabre" apparently means "to know" in Portuguese and "patient" in Arabic (not fluent in either). You need to motivate why entries like Saber (sectoral currency) and Saber Abar should appear on an entirely unrelated DAB-page. We've discussed the latter case previously: in my opinion it is not enough for you to refer to other editors' actions, especially since "people" is one person: Cnilep. Since you are the merge proposal originator, LtPowers, what is your opinion? After all, we may just as well come to a consensus moving Saber Abar onto Sabre (disambiguation) was an honest mistake.
In the end, I feel the best course of action is to re-separate the sabre and saber entries, especially those that aren't cognate with the weapon. But that is not a strongly held position. If (and only if) other editors chime in and argue for your proposal, I might be persuaded. Regards CapnZapp (talk) 10:59, 6 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment: You surmise correctly that I had no intent to merge the pages (as far as I remember; I actually had to look up the article history). IIRC, my intent with that edit was formal, MOS-related clean up. If I added anything that can't be called sabre, it was due to carelessness. Cnilep (talk) 00:10, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Support Saber redirects to sabre so it seems the words are considered pretty similar. and the Sabre page begins Isn't the whole point of a disambiguation page that entities unrelated to each other appear next to each other Stgpcm (talk) 09:59, 24 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
Oppose, on the grounds that most of the Saber (disambiguation) names are Arabic (for "patient", as discussed above) and hence unrelated to sabre. The hatnotes are sufficient to guide those who are unsure of the spelling they're looking for. Klbrain (talk) 23:17, 2 January 2018 (UTC)Reply
Closing, given no consensus for the merge over almost 2 years.
