Does this article have the right title? Does anyone use the term "safe zone" as opposed to "de-escalation zone"? BobFromBrockley (talk) 16:18, 8 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Various proposals for a safe zone by various sides that actually expect the safe zone to protect them from each other.

edit

The Kurds called for a safe zone/no-fly zone that no doubt disallowed Turkey into it. Alternatively Turkey also wanted a safe zone. There is also the buffer zones. I think this article could do with each section having its description. This should avoid confusion when referencing sources talking about supporting or not supporting a safe zone, some of it can be distinguished via dates. Also the article might be better off being named Safe Zones (Syria).

Safe Zone (Syria)Safe & No-fly zones in Syria – This article used to be regarding the no-fly zone topic and various proposals, sometimes referred to as a safe zone in some sources. Over time content regarding other de-escalation zones were included and in order to better reflect the article now I believe it should be named 'Safe & No-fly zones in Syria' to better reflect the scope. I thought this was not really a controversial change, but user Beshogur reverted. I would split this into two articles: De-escalation zones in Syria (or something like that) and No-Fly Zones in Syria. It's really confusing to conflate the two, and the term "safe zone" is not really used. BobFromBrockley (talk) 13:32, 8 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm not against it, but a main article might be a good idea to differentiate all the various zones and proposals as there is already Idlib demilitarization (2018–2019) which is the only de-escalation zones I can think of and Turkey did use the term "safe zone" although in actuality its proposal for one were purely for getting support for its intended occupation zones that is obviously apparent now, but nevertheless sources are referring to such a proposal (source). On the other hand calls for a no-fly zone by the Kurds started to increase roughly before the invasion of Afrin. I think it's best to just stick to one article, and if it gets too long a main article can easily be introduced say for a No-fly zone in northern Syria. --TataofTata (talk) 00:22, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
On reflection, I agree. The current lead makes it seem like the article is about de-escalation zones and has nothing to do with the body. The current lead should be moved down and a new lead created which covers the actual contents. Probably the name proposed by TataofTata is a better one. I have edited the lead but it could do with more work. I've also made the article chronological. Hope that's an improvement. BobFromBrockley (talk) 19:50, 9 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I currently do not have the full time to contribute heavily, but wanted to make a start as it's been on my to-do list for a while. Also as for Turkey's 2013 date of proposal, I'm not sure of that as none of the sources provided states it so I have removed it for now. --TataofTata (talk) 15:17, 10 November 2021 (UTC)Reply
