The slave Abu Fakih

edit

This paragraph is doubtful, so I have moved it hither.

Abu Fakih was a slave of Safwan ibn Umayya. Abu Fakih accepted Islam, and when Safwan came to know that Abu Fakih had become a Muslim, he subjected him to great torture. When Abu Bakr came to know of the pitiable condition of Abu Fakih, he purchased him from his master and set him free.

According to Ibn Ishaq, Abu Fakih belonged to a different Safwan ibn Umayya (Guillaume, p. 179).

When the apostle used to sit in the mosque with his more insignificant companions such as Khabbab, Ammar, Abu Fukayha Yasar freedman of Safwan ibn Umayya ibn Muharrith, Suhayb, and their like, the Quraysh used to jeer at them and say to one another, “These are his companions, as you see. Is it such creatures that God has chosen from among us to give guidance and truth?” & etc.

I did not find any evidence that Safwan's wife Fakhita was also known as Najiyah, or that he fled from the Battle of Badr.

Both assertions may be correct, but they await further research.Petra MacDonald 05:48, 10 October 2014 (UTC)
