Dutch expression: I sucked it from my thumb

edit

There's a Dutch expression, "I sucked it out of my thumb" ("uit mijn duim gezogen"), that's used when someone doens't want to say where they got some information. It's similar to, but not exactly, when English-speakers'd say "a little birdie told me".

Anyone got ideas on whether there's a connection between this and the Salmon of Knowledge? Gronky (talk) 02:42, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Similar in German "sich etwas aus den Fingern saugen" ("to suck something out of the fingers"). Connection is likely, as the motif also occurs in continental and Scandinavian versions of Sigfried's youth. But it's rather a migration-period all-European motif than a direct loan from the Celts. Of knowledge or of wisdom?

edit

I've never heard of this story being called the "Salmon of Wisdom".

Is there a good reason for using this strange and rare name? Or should I rename the article to "Salmon of Knowledge"? Gronky (talk) 02:51, 14 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I totally agree, and have gone ahead and moved it - Alison 06:10, 18 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Apparent mistake in phrasing

edit

"(It is sometimes confused with Fintan mac Bóchra, who was known as "The Wise" and was once transformed into a salmon.)"

To say this implies that to call the Salmon 'Fintan' is an error. But the entire article goes on to call it that; so I have changed that to "identified with", meaning that it is (in some degree) likely that they are the same thing. Harfarhs (talk) 13:15, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
