The sources listed on this page show two different years of birth for Toto, 1873 and 1878. Additionally, I found an alternative source not listed here that shows his year of birth as being 1877. His tombstone has the year 1878 engraved on it. Unless a more definitive source can be located I would offer that his tombstone offers the most (and my apologies for this) concrete evidence of his birth year. Hammersbach, in my experience birth years on tombstones are often wrong and are unreliable for determining birth if there's a conflict of dates. The 2014 Warner article used for the November 7, 1873 birth cites the index of the Palermo birth records for the birth date. Footnote #131 of that article uses D'Aquila's 1918 WWI draft card and his 1912 marriage record for citations of D'Aquila's addresses in those years. The earlier marriage record lists his age as 35 or an 1877 birth while the later draft registration lists his birthdate as November 9, 1873. I also looked up his death certificate which lists his age as 52 or an 1875 birth if he was born in November. The Palermo birth index citation date used by Warner and his fellow authors would probably be the best to use, since it would be closest to his birth. I just removed a photograph of mafia gangster Saverio "Sam" Pollaccia that was incorrectly identified as D'Aquila. It is a cropped image from a photo of Pollaccia on page 212 of The Origin of Organized Crime in America by David Critchley (2009). The caption clearly identifies him as Pollaccia. Unfortunately, the Google Books page of the book won't show photographs from the book, so if you don't have a physical copy of the book you will not be able to see the photograph. But I found another photograph of Pollaccia, on this article webpage here. This webpage says this other photo of Pollaccia comes from a 1924 edition of the Chicago Tribune. A comparison of the two photos look like it's the same man, although the 1924 photo of Pollaccia in a courtroom doesn't have him wearing a hat. Libertybison (talk) 21:26, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
