Name confusion
editThe names Salvia polystachia and Salvia polystachya seem to be confused. Three designations are used in the literature:
- Salvia polystachia Cav. – spelling in Plants of the World Online (PoWO) and Tropicos, for example;
as of now spelt Salvia polystachya Cav. in the International Plant Names Index (IPNI) - Salvia polystachya M.Martens & Galeotti – an illegitimate name and a synonym of Salvia xalapensis Benth. according to PoWO
- Salvia polystachya Ortega – not in PoWO or IPNI, described as "nom. illeg. hom." in Tropicos; in my view not intended as a new name, but a description by Ortega of Salvia polystachia Cav. with a different spelling of the epithet – see the supposed 'protologue'
I think it's clearer to follow PoWO and Tropicos, and have this article at Salvia polystachia, but other authors seem to have used all the above names in the context of chia. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:30, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
- IPNI has just changed its entry to Salvia polystachia Cav.. The only entry in IPNI for the spelling polystachya is now the M.Martens & Galeotti name. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:26, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
