editFunny how everyone makes a fuss if a 'foreigner' plays for England... why no mention of Warburton's parents? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.145.148.62 (talk) 16:50, 1 October 2011 (UTC)
Sam Warburton's father is Welsh; source, my father went to school with him, Jonathan Warburton. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.219.178.60 (talk) 23:05, 22 March 2013 (UTC)
British or Welsh?
editThis has caused a bit of a flurry - Warburton describing his nationality as British, and an MP then saying "it was hard to understand how someone who does not consider themselves to be Welsh can be captain of the national rugby side". (Of course, the MP's legal nationality is also British.) Should we mention this in the article? Ghmyrtle (talk) 21:00, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- We could mention it, but to be honest he is not defining himself as not being Welsh. You are allowed to be Welsh and British; I am. He is also talking with a captains cap on too, he's a diplomat. He was the captain of the British Lions, and he wants to take the sting out of an English comment. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:52, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- I agree, but I thought it was worth raising the question before anyone starts being silly about it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:00, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- I hadn't seen the story, otherwise I would have replied to the article differently. But if it's causing enough of a stir, it should be mentioned. FruitMonkey (talk) 22:05, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

- As predicted. And reverted. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:19, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
- Sam Warburton self identified himself as British, on top of being legally British. Why would that not be enough to satisfy an edit of his identity? --Erzan (talk) 16:52, 11 March 2014 (UTC)
- He said that "... when asked about his nationality during the 2013 Lions tour he would tell people he was British." He did not say that he was not Welsh. Per WP:UKNATIONALS, "For sportspeople, their nationality is usually described by the national team that they qualify to represent or, in individual sports, the national sports association or federation with which they are registered." Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:52, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
- The claim was not he renounced his identity as Welsh. But he did in that video state he saw himself British too. Erzan (talk) 14:28, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- Of course he is British too. Everyone in Wales is British too. But try re-reading the words that are relevant to this article: "For sportspeople, their nationality is usually described by the national team that they qualify to represent or, in individual sports, the national sports association or federation with which they are registered." Ghmyrtle (talk) 16:26, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
- And does the person self identification not come into the equation? It seems to have done for many other wiki entries, for example Andy Murray and Chris Hoy. --Erzan (talk) 12:58, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- But what if he also identifies himself as Welsh? "because my dad’s English I haven’t grown up with the same mentality as a lot of other Welshmen." We must be careful that Warburton was acting with a captains voice, and maybe as someone that would like to captain the Lions again. Every English, Scottish and Welsh Lion article I've come across states their national as their Home Country. It would be best to mention the affair but keep him as Welsh. FruitMonkey (talk) 21:57, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- At 0:17 minutes in he says "if someone asks me about my nationality I just say British". http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-26472782 --Erzan (talk) 23:34, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
- I am completely aware of that, but he also self-identifies himself as Welsh. I would also like to hear the whole interview, as we do not know what was said before hand by Warburton, or what the question was. The same article states that if he would state he was British during the Lions tour. That is a different context to self-identifying yourself as British, as if I was the captain of the British Lions, and I was on the British Lions tour and someone asked me my nationality I would state British too. Mainly because I would not want the storm from the newspapers stating that I should have the captaincy taken off me as I saw myself as Welsh. FruitMonkey (talk) 19:03, 7 April 2014 (UTC)
- The link you provided is not working. Regardless of what was said before or after, it doesn't change that fact that he does acknowledge his British identity. This is not a question whether he sees himself as Welsh, it is whether he (in addition) sees himself as British, which by his own accounts he does. He was not referring to what he says on tour, he literally says if someone asks me my nationality I say British. If Sam can acknowledge his Welsh and British identity, surely his wiki entry like Andy Murray's could do the same. --Erzan (talk) 12:31, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
- Edited his Early life and infobox section to acknowledge his Welsh and British/UK identity, leaving the introduction. Which follows the rules for sportspeople. Thoughts? --Erzan (talk) 09:57, 17 April 2014 (UTC)

Sam Warburton is Welsh, he was born in Wales, went to a Welsh school, plays for Wales Rugby team, there is nothing more you need to know, to know that he is Welsh. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.150.38.252 (talk • contribs) 16:23, 19 October 2014

Hi http://www.cardiffblues.com/rugby/first_team_squad.php?player=33335&includeref=dynamic is the current correct link for Sam. Also can ye please edit his Cardiff blues caps. Currently its stated at 175 which is way off from the stated amount of games in the link. He'll have more caps for Wales by the end of his career than the Blues at this point! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trytime1 (talk • contribs) 08:31, 26 March 2018 (UTC)
Name?
editThe article indicates his name to be "Kennedy-Warburton", but based on the infobox "Kennedy" could be a middle name. While of course it's possible his surname is "Kennedy Warburton", unhyphenated, is there any definitive word on this simply for the sake of consistency in the article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.144.76.135 (talk) 16:07, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
