Samuel Johnson → Dr. Samuel Johnson —(Discuss) Since the Feb 2006 page move, 6 new entries have been added to the Samuel Johnson (disambiguation) page including Sam Houston Johnson, a Presidential sibling, Samuel Ealy Johnson, Jr., a Presidential father, Samuel Ealy Johnson, Sr., a Presidential grandfather, Samuel Johnson (footballer), an active footballer, and Samuel Curtis Johnson, Sr. the patriarch of the richest family in Wisconsin. The primacy of Dr. Samuel Johnson versus the remaining field of Samuel Johnsons should be reconsidered. Singles in 1887

OS Nock (see Sandbox (locomotive)) describes Johnson as having built his first singles as a batch of five with 7'4" drivers in 1887. Does anyone know what their class was called? Andy Dingley (talk) 22:10, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

See Baxter, Bertram (1982). Baxter, David (ed.). British Locomotive Catalogue 1825-1923, volume 3A: Midland Railway and its constituent companies. Ashbourne: Moorland Publishing. p. 133.

Baxter doesn't give many class names, but I guess that these form the 25 Class. There were 18 of these 7'4" 4-2-2, built in four batches:

Derby O/655: nos. 25-29 (5), built 1887
Derby O/745: nos. 30-32 (3), built 1888-89
Derby O/796: nos. 1854-7, 37 (5), built 1889
Derby O/809: nos. 1858-62 (5), built 1889-90

They were renumbered 600-7 and 610-9 in 1907. Withdrawals were from 1919 to 1928, most going 1921-2; only two survived to the LMS, nos. 600 & 614. The gaps (608/9) were the balance of O/745 and were the first two of the well-known 7'6" 4-2-2 which continued from 620 to 669. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:36, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
