Olympic Use

edit

Why was Sanford Stadium, which is located in Athens, used for the 1996 Olympics? I thought the games are in Atlanta. It would of made sense to use Bobby Dodd Stadium instead of Sanford.--BigMac1212 04:11, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

The '96 Games used sites across Georgia and the Southeast; few Olympics are held entirely in one municipality, and Atlanta's certainly were not. According to an article from the Athens newspaper, Athens civic boosters had worked for years to get a piece of the Games, and the access to big-time venues that UGA provided made it worthwhile. For one, the medal rounds of soccer/football drew 75,000-85,000 spectators -- well above what Bobby Dodd or even the Georgia Dome can hold. Plus, both Dodd and the Dome are in the heart of downtown Atlanta (along with most other Olympic venues), which would have caused even more traffic/mass transit issues than already existed during the Games. It was a win-win for ACOG to shift soccer to Athens. --SuperNova |T|C| 04:37, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
The soccer venues were pretty spread out because they needed multiple facilities for both men's and women's: in addition to Sanford Stadium there was the Citrus Bowl, Orlando, Fla., Legion Field, Birmingham, Ala., Orange Bowl, Miami, RFK Stadium, Washington, D.C. It might not have been wide enough for Olympic regulations. --Roswell native 04:52, 24 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Affirmative. Tech's field was too small for the size mandated by the IOC, and the capacity of their stadium at the time (30,000-40,000) was far smaller than the other venues that were used.--Jhortman 23:12, 24 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
