What exactly is this woman famous for? Cheating on her husband? Colluding with a dubious charlatan named John Bennett? Having sex with several men? What exactly makes her famous - that she was born and decades later died? Did she write anything, lead any groups, invent something? Why does anyone believe she warrants her own page and that she passes the notability test? This is but a page used to conveniently use POV slander against Joseph Smith, Jr. - nothing more A Sniper (talk) 19:47, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WP:PROVEIT. Where are your reliable sources to back up these claims? Please bear in mind ≈ jossi ≈'s comment that, "primary sources, if used at all, need to be used very cautiously: Wikipedia is not a publisher of original research. Face it, Sarah Pratt isn't famous or notable for anything that Wikipedia would consider for a standalone article. Notable for having been allegedly approached by the famous Joseph Smith, Jr.? Notable for having been married to polygamist Orson Pratt? Notable for her friendship with John C. Bennett? There is nothing for me to prove - it is you who needs to prove this person is notable enough to have a standalone article. A Sniper (talk) 20:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, really? I just added a relevant quote from her criticism of plural marriage that appears in Eskridge (2002), Harvard University Press. A simple Google search yields dozens more. Where's your reliable sources to back up your claims? Please bear in mind ≈ jossi ≈'s comment to you that, "primary sources, if used at all, need to be used very cautiously: Wikipedia is not a publisher of original research. So, Sarah Pratt is actually a famous, notable critic of polygamy? She wrote books on the subject, gave lectures at the time, wrote pamphlets and such? That is what she is famous for? That is what warrants a standalone article? Because of the vast number of pages that can be Googled? Hmm, and all this time I thought she just kept to herself, occasionally interviewed because of her oddity status and interesting gossip from the inside about polygamy. Let's just wait for the deletion results. A Sniper (talk) 20:52, 9 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I'm pretty certain that most reasonable people would agree that one of the founders of the Anti-Polygamy Society in Salt Lake City is notable, as I've added here. In reality, your fervent desire to delete this page is yet another attempt at Wikilawyering to delete or suppress verifiable facts based on reliable sources. This is a woman not famous or notable for anything, actually, other than accusations she made against a famous man forty years after the fact, having an affair with a dubious boarder while her husband was overseas, and being married to a man who had lots of polygamous wives. Work in progress

edit

Please see User talk:Écrasez l'infâme#"Declared to be" a plural wife for a discussion regarding the characterization of Sarah Pratt as a plural wife of Joseph Smith. I offered to implement the changes I feel are needed to balance the article, and Écrasez can then revert or tweak, to identify those areas of remaining disagreement. I have made some changes so far to the article lede and infobox, and plan to make more changes in a matter of hours to the article body. alanyst /talk/ 22:31, 10 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Update: my "matter of hours" hit some Real Life delays. Very sorry. I hope to devote some time to this in the next day or two. If this is intolerable, please forge ahead without me, in case anyone was waiting on me. alanyst /talk/ 05:09, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
alanyst, of course, please make any edits you deem necessary whenever you have a chance to do so. Écrasez l'infâme (talk) 10:38, 11 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I finally had a chance to do some work on the article. Please see what you think. alanyst /talk/ 03:50, 15 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
