Talk:Scandinavian Coldblood Trotter

The name

edit

I've made this stub with this name, as was suggested. I don't know any Swedish, but it rather looks as if a name meaning "Nordic Coldblood Trotter" has come into use. If so, it may be that this article should eventually be moved to that name. But it's probably more valuable to get it written than to worry over the exact name at this point.

The first sentence as I wrote it was poorly worded, reading "A Coldblood Trotter may belong to either one of two closely related and interconnected breeds of horse ...". A subsequent edit had replaced that with "A Coldblood Trotter is a term ...". But it's a kind of horse not a kind of word, so I've put back what I had written earlier. If anyone can come up with better phrasing ...

The name that allbreedpedigree.com uses for this breed is "Draft Trotter". Coldblood Trotter just seems hopelessly inadequate. I know one shouldn't get personally involved in Wikipedia articles, but I created the original Draft Trotter article and spent a GOOD MANY hours on that! I find it callous that SO much information has been removed from my article and what is essentially a stub has been created. Not so much as a trace of my original article remains. Harsh! Nimloth250
We can go back and review the old article to see if we can reincorporate some of the material, but the problem is that some of the older articles were inadequately sourced with footnotes and we can't veriify the information. Sourcing stuff has really tightened up on WP these days. The "draft/coldblood" trotter issue has been addressed by a Scandanavian editor who has explained that "coldblood" is the proper term -- these animals are a bit too sprightly to really be "draft" animals; the nuance may be subtle, but it's there. I have gotten the impression that saying "draft" is mildly insulting, but I'm not certain of that. Montanabw(talk) 23:38, 3 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Nimloth! I am sorry the article you started got so cut about. Montana is obviously not aware that you are also a Scandinavian editor and familiar with these horses, unlike everyone else here. The Coldblood Trotter title was chosen on the advice of editor Pitke, with the intention of covering both Norwegian and Swedish coldblood trotting horses and the complex relationships between them in one article. But the article never seems to have got started. As I understand it (and believe me, that is not very far!), both the Norwegian and the Swedish names for these horses include the equivalent of "coldblood trotter", so perhaps the name is not so bad? In any case it can be changed at any time. Would you be interested in trying to help get some of this article written (I can't read any Scandinavian language)? And what about giving a hand with sorting out the confusions at Dølehest (my uninformed guess is that a good part of what is there should be moved here)? I wasn't the one who did the merge, so don't kill the messenger JLAN (smile). What's happening, Nimloth is that when we work on these smaller relatively rare breed articles, we are trying to make them well-sourced -- there were a bunch that had to be tossed or dramatically cut due to wholesale copy-and-paste copyright violations from uncited source material. So we didn't take much from the old article. And yes, there was consensus that there is a nuanced difference amongst those who care between "draft" and "coldblood". (Here, I support the closer translation, seems to be more accurate.) If you want to put the text into a sandbox to work on, you easily can retrieve the old text by clicking "what links here" which will bring up the old name and by bringing up the redirect page and going into its history, you can see everything that was in there before. The problem with the old version is that it had no references. Wouldn't be that difficult to return to your sources, add in some footnotes and move over some of the most useful sections. You'd be welcome to further expand and improve this article, I'm sure, but the thing is to have cited material. Montanabw(talk) 18:00, 5 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi! Misteh-Meep here. I currently own a Swedish Coldblood Square Trotter and was surprised at the lack of information about them. Here I have more information about the breed which I found while researching: http://misteh-meep.deviantart.com/journal/Findings-301949149 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Misteh-Meep (talkcontribs) 09:36, 14 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

Reclassified as stub

edit

The WikiProject classification for Scandinavian coldblood trotter was Start-class. It has been reclassified as Stub-class per request.   ~ Tom.Reding (talkdgaf)  16:11, 13 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think this one (barely) passes stub to start. It has images, it has section headings, it has some refs, definitely needs more work, but it has enough meat to pass stub, IMHO. (And no skin off my nose if there is disagreement). Montanabw(talk) 03:19, 15 July 2016 (UTC)Reply

Excellent new article

On the genetics of the "gaitkeeper" gene, which appears to have relatively little impact on these horses: http://www.thehorse.com/articles/39872/gene-mutation-no-performance-effect-in-coldblooded-trotters?utm_source=Newsletter&utm_medium=breeding&utm_campaign=11-19-2017 Montanabw(talk) 18:16, 20 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
