Article suggests the company has shut down solar operations. But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photovoltaics_companies#Summary here is says it keeps working. Is it from China?190.131.28.107 (talk) 02:13, 30 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Book about Schott by Kappler & Steiner: primary source

edit

I was curious about the book used as a reference in the article, so I had it lent to my local library and consulted it there. The two authors, Kappler and Steiner, are/were public relations managers at Schott. The book is published by Schott AG. It describes the history of the company in broadly positive terms and is largely self-serving. This is definitely a primary source, and I would say, not one of the best kind.

For the anecdote, the book is binded with a plate of Ceran glass by Schott. It contains dozens of illustrations copied from Wikimedia Commons, all vaguely attributed but without mention of a license. -- Ariadacapo (talk) 19:17, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thank you very much for your feedback! I have replaced the references to the Kappler/Steiner book with better sources. Hopefully this is an improvement to the article. While doing this, I've also collected some additional information and sources relating to the company's history during and after WW2 which I would also like to incorporate in the next couple of weeks. Maintenance Template Removal

edit

Hi, I have made some changes to the article to address the issues identified in the maintenance template, in particular the self-published and primary sources in the history section. I understand that I can't remove the templates myself as a paid editor, but I was wondering if one of you would be able to take a look?

I would also like to better understand how I can contribute to resolving the "written like an advertisement" issue. Are there any particular formulations that I could improve? Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 09:21, 4 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Elisabeth at SCHOTT please review the note I left on your talk page. Per Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines, you should not edit the page directly but instead propose changes on the talk page for review. I am going to go ahead and revert the changes; please post them as separate requests here on the talk page for review. I think most of the edits are likely reasonable and would be easily accepted, but they should be reviewed individually. As for your questions, many of the sources in the article are sourced directly from Schott, rather than other third-party websites. Best, SpencerT•C 06:00, 22 May 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Spencer,
I’ve followed your advice and submitted our changes (reverted for procedural reasons) through the edit request process. Unfortunately, I haven’t received any response yet after a couple of weeks (see below).
As far as I am aware, COI users are discouraged from editing Wikipedia directly, but it is not forbidden. While I understand that company representatives editing company pages on Wikipedia can be problematic, I worked hard to make sure that my edits were factual and in the interests of the broader Wikipedia readers. That’s why I focused on making edits to the history section that I thought would be relatively uncontroversial.
I am still convinced that my changes constitute an improvement to the article and address long-standing issues.
Would you be so kind as to take another look at my changes? Otherwise, would you be able to give me a recommendation as to how to move forward with 1) the edits themselves, and 2) the template issues?
Thanks! Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 14:28, 27 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
I noticed that our edit request was closed (see below) even though it has not been resolved. Would you please advise me as to how to proceed? I still think that our edits that you reverted improved the article (see my comments above). It would be great if someone could explain to me what the concrete issues were with the contents of my edits, otherwise I would like to add them back into the article. Proposed Changes for Review

edit

Per Spencer's request (see above), I would like to propose a couple of changes that I had made previously to the article, but were reverted for procedural reasons:

 1. Updates to corporate facts (employee and revenue numbers): https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Schott_AG&diff=prev&oldid=1141140325
 2. To address the templates regarding too many primary / self-published sources, I added a number of secondary sources to the history section and also made small textual edits where the new sources provided relevant information: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Schott_AG&diff=1151825163&oldid=1141140325

It would be great if someone could restore my edits. I feel that my edits are supported by credible secondary sources, and overall that they contribute to improving the article. If you have any questions or concerns, I am happy to discuss!

It's been one month since this request was first replied to. It appears that some changes were made, and then these were reverted. If new changes are requested to be made, then these should be placed into a new request, which is easier than asking to revert older changes. thank you!  Spintendo  20:04, 30 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Proposed Edits to History Section

 • The sentence "Erich Schott, the founder’s son, took over management of the glass factory in 1927." should be replaced with:
In 1928, Otto Schott's son Erich Schott, born in 1891, took over the company's management.[1] He developed new business fields for the company, such as specialty glass components for electrical engineering and heat resistant borosilicate glassware.[2]

 • In the Jürgen Steiner reference Deutsche Biographie provided with the request, Steiner states: "1927 trat Schott die Nachfolge seines Vaters in der Geschäftsleitung an und baute die Marktposition des Jenaer Glaswerks als eines der weltweit führenden Spezialglashersteller weiter aus."
 • From this, we can see that the year in which Steiner describes Erich Schott as taking over management of the company was 1927, not 1928.

Regards,  Spintendo  18:25, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi Spintendo, you are right, my mistake! The LIDAR Magazine source had 1928 listed, and Deutsche Biographie has 1927 listed. I spoke with our archivist, and he confirmed that 1927 is the correct date. Please see below for the revised edit request:

Thanks for your help! Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 14:20, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

The German word gründete means founded, which is different than the word for developed, entwickelt. The source says Er gründete neue Geschäftsfelder, wie z. B. Herstellung von Spezialglaskomponenten für die Elektrotechnik oder von hitzebeständigen Hauswirtschaftsgläsern der Marke Jenaer Glas, sowie erste Tochtergesellschaften which indicates that he founded the areas of the company which then produced heat resistant household and electrical engineering glass, whereas to say that he developed new business fields of glass production, as in the proposal, would make it sound as if he were in the lab creating the glass himself. I think it would be best if we describe it as 'founded' rather than 'developed'. Let me know what you think about this. Regards,  Spintendo  15:52, 2 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Hi Spintendo, Thanks for your feedback! To me, “developed” in the context of business is very general, but I can see your point. I would propose to translate “gründete” as “established,” so then we could say he “established new business fields for the company, such as a specialty glass components for electrical engineering and heat resistant borosilicate glassware.” Alternatively, perhaps something like “Under his leadership, the company developed new business fields, such as specialty glass components for electrical engineering and heat resistant borosilicate glassware.” would work? Proposed Edits to History/Split

Hi, I have a few suggestions for the section Split.

Thanks in advance! -- Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 11:15, 10 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

 • What I think should be changed:
In the midst of Germany's political division after World War II, the Jena factory was expropriated transformed into a state-owned entity in 1948.
+
In the midst of Germany's political division after World War II, the Jena factory was expropriated and transformed into a state-owned entity in 1948.

...

While the state-owned company in Jena developed into one of the most important specialty glass suppliers in Eastern Europe, Erich Schott developed an international group in Mainz with sales offices in Europe, the US and Asia.
+
While the VEB Jenaer Glaswerk developed into one of the most important specialty glass suppliers in the Eastern Bloc, Schott in Mainz gradually expanded into a multinational group, with production sites and sales office in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
 • Why it should be changed:
 1. Missing word "and"
 2. Name VEB Jenaer Glaswerk is introduced and explained above.
 3. Eastern Bloc is more accurate since it clearly refers to the economic/political divide during the cold war
 4. Erich Shott didn't do it himself; added production sites (as mentioned in the source)
 • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button):

I don't think the changes above need additional references. However, the following source could be added. It mentions the gradual expansion as Schott grew into a multinational group, and it mentions Brazil as the first country of the expansion, hence the change from US to "the Americas" above): [1]

 • Your edit request could not be reviewed because the claims made do not contain ref tags. When proposing edit requests, it is important to highlight in the text, through the use of ref tags, which specific sources are doing the referencing for each claim. The point of these ref tags is to allow the reviewer and readers to check that the material is sourced; that point will be lost if the references are not clearly placed. In the collapsed section below titled Request edit examples, I have illustrated two: The first shows how the edit request was submitted; the second shows how requests should be submitted in the future.

In the example above there are three references provided for the stated claims. But the text does not indicate, through the use of ref tags, which reference applies to which claim. Your edit request similarly does not provide ref tags indicating which source goes where. The links between material and their source references must be clearly made, as shown in the next example below:

 • Why it should be changed:
 1. "state-owned company in Jena" is redundant (concept of VEB already introduced and explained above), company should be called by its actual name here: VEB Jenaer Glaswerk.
 2. "Eastern Europe" is misleading. Given the historical context, Eastern Bloc is more accurate since it clearly refers to the economic/political divide during the Cold War
 3. "Erich Schott developed" is misleading since he didn't do it himself. Should be replaced by "Schott in Mainz".
 4. Actual sites included South America, so "US" should be changed to "Americas"

Revised products section

edit

Hello editors, I've worked on the products section to improve the lack of references and marketing tonality, as well as to provide a better overview of the products and applications. This new draft should address these issues and is meant to replace the existing section:

Schott produces materials including specialty glass, glass-ceramics, and polymers for industries such as home appliances, pharmaceuticals, electronics, semiconductors, optics, life sciences, automotive, aerospace and astronomy.[1]

In the consumer market, glass-ceramics from Schott are used in cooktops for electric, gas, and induction cooking under the brand name CERAN.[2]

In industry, its glass-ceramic Zerodur is used in microlithography and as mirror substrates for large optical telescopes.[3]

Prominent examples of these telescopes are the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope and Extremely Large Telescope in Chile,[3] the Gran Telescopio Canarias in Spain,[4] and the Keck I and II telescopes at the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii.[5]

Other applications include flat glass for home appliances,[6] components for consumer electronics[7] and semiconductor manufacturing[8]. It also produces glass and filters with applications in digital cameras,[9] laser optics, machine vision, and metrology.[10] Some of its more recent applications include ultra-thin and flexible cover glass for smartphone displays[11] and glass wafers for augmented reality.[12]

Schott’s subsidiary Schott Pharma develops and produces pharmaceutical packaging such as ampoules, cartridges, syringes, and vials.[13]

Revised company profile

edit

Hi all, I’d like to propose a new version for the “company profile” section. The current profile has a lot of extraneous information about the company’s historic revenues and some international expansions. My suggestion is to reduce the section to key facts about the company’s ownership/corporate structure, publicly listed subsidiary, management, and high-level, current information on the revenues, employees, and reach. Thanks for your consideration, and let me know if you have any feedback! Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 08:23, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Company profile

edit

Schott AG is a joint-stock company (Aktiengesellschaft). It is owned by the Carl Zeiss Foundation, which holds all shares of Schott AG and its sister company Carl Zeiss AG, a German manufacturer of optical systems and optoelectronics.[1]

Chairman of the Board of Management is Frank Heinricht, a German physicist with a doctorate in engineering[2], who was appointed in June 2013.[3]

Schott had revenues of 2.9 million euros in fiscal year 2022-2023 (up from 2.8 billion euros in 2021-2022) and has over 17,000 employees in over 30 countries.[4]

Schott's subsidiary Schott Pharma is listed in the SDAX at the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.[5] Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 08:23, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not done: That's not enough grounds to remove information. Is there any specific issue you have with the citations or wording given in the company profile section? ⸺(Random)staplers 21:34, 20 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Randomstaplers, the info I proposed to remove does not seem relevant for the company as a whole. Schott has productions in many countries which are covered in the operations section of the article. In particular:
 • "SCHOTT AG established a glass manufacturing facility..." A single facility established 25 years ago doesn't seem relevant to me. This info is also not supported by citations. Schott's India production is already mentioned in the Operations section.
 • "The German Group also has a 50-50 Joint venture...": Same point here. Why is this relevant? Schott has many joint ventures and subsidiaries, so it seems random to pick just this one. The information is both unsourced and outdated.
 • "The company started operations in China since 2011...": Schott has operations in over 30 countries. It seems unnecessary to highlight the start date of operations in just one of these. Again, the China operations are already mentioned in the operations section. The cited source is also not available anymore (error message).
Hope that explains the reasoning behind the change request. Thanks for taking another look at this! Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 09:54, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Done I've consolidated those lines into the 'operations' section. I've preserved the joint venture information (presumably it's important to someone?) with the proper weight, AFAIK. ⸺(Random)staplers 18:00, 22 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Randomstaplers, thanks for removing some of the irrelevant info from the company profile. Regarding the joint ventures in the operations section:
For Kaisha and Serum Institute, I still don't think this is relevant and it is also inaccurate (sounds like it is two joint ventures, when that isn't the case). For Hareon, this was a joint venture with Schott Solar, which hasn't existed in over a decade (see Solar Industry section). Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 13:31, 29 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Operations section to replace Plants in Germany section

edit

Hi all, I’d like to propose a new text to replace the “Plants in Germany” section. Since Schott operates in many different countries, I don't think this gives Wikipedia readers the whole picture. I've written a new draft to include the most relevant operations from a global perspective. In case someone would like to keep the German locations, one could also include them in the text, but I thought that might be a bit too detailed. I've used sources from our website, but hopefully that is ok for this type of information. Thanks for your consideration, and let me know if you have any feedback! Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 08:32, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Operations

edit

Schott’s corporate headquarters and largest site is located in Mainz, Germany[1]. Its main business regions are Europe, North America, and Asia. In Europe, it operates production sites in six locations in Germany, as well as in the Czech Republic, Finland, France, Hungary, Italy, Switzerland, and Turkey[2]. In addition to its North American corporate office in Rye Brook, New York[3], it has six US production sites in Duryea and Lebanon, Pennsylvania; Southbridge, Massachusetts; Louisville, Kentucky; Vincennes, Indiana; and Phoenix, Arizona[4]. In Asia, Schott has productions in China[5], India[6], and Malaysia[7]. Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 08:32, 3 July 2024 (UTC)Reply

Done Thanks for the edit! One minor thing: citations generally go after punctuation, not before. Rusalkii (talk) 23:21, 11 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Rusalkii, thanks for your review! Duly noted with the punctuation! I just wanted to ask if you could take a look at the Revised Company Profile I proposed as well? Or shall I wait for someone else to take a look at it? Elisabeth at SCHOTT (talk) 13:42, 12 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
