Odd fellow?

End of term as Speaker

edit

The House Journal entry for March 3, 1869 shows Colfax participating in business and then giving a speech before resigning his position. I have therefore adjusted his end of term to be March 3, 1869, not March 2.

How do you pronounce 'Schuyler'? Rmpfu89 23:25, 21 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

I've heard both shyler and shewler
They are both wrong, Schuyler is my name and it is pronounced Sky-ler. xxpor yo!|see what i've done 01:25, 22 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
Just because you pronounce it one way doesn't mean that he did. What is the source on how his name was pronounced? TexianPolitico (talk) 01:37, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Logical gap

"moved with his parents" ... but his father died before he was born. Too Old 18:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Memorial Plaque

edit

It appears that the historical marker in Washington Park in Mankato, Minnesota (site of the old 4th street Omaha Road depot) has his name spelled "Schuler", which appears to be a not uncommon misspelling of his name according to old correspondence. Group29 (talk) 16:52, 19 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Line of Succession

edit

I was interested that there was an attempt to assassinate vice-president Andrew Johnson at the same time as Lincoln. What if they had succeeded? Would Colfax have become president? What would a Colfax presidency have looked like? PatGallacher (talk) 19:48, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid this question is based on a misconception, the line of succession after the vice-president is layed down by legislation, not the constitution, at that time the president pro tempore of the Senate would have succeeded. PatGallacher (talk) 01:08, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Are you sure about that? I think Secretary of State used to be third in line. TexianPolitico (talk) 01:38, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

First name pronunciation

edit

Is there a good source for how his first name was pronounced? I've seen several different claims, but no proof. TexianPolitico (talk) 01:39, 21 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

I believe "Sky-ler" is best documented by his nickname, "Schuyler the Smiler", as described in the Senate history on Vice Presidents: http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/VP_Schuyler_Colfax.htm Dictioneer (talk) 02:16, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

Expansion planned for this article

edit

I've made an initial edit to the article to expand the information on Colfax's early life, plus modified some of the section headings to be more consistent. As I get time (and suitable sources) I hope to expand/add sections on Colfax's time with the Know-Nothings, his term as Speaker of the House, his journey out west by stage coach, and his career as a public lecturer. Any suggestions for additional sources welcome. Dictioneer (talk) 01:43, 8 September 2013 (UTC)Reply
