Yahoo recent difficulties

edit

Where should this text be added: "...three-year revenue slump and shore up a stock that has lost 10 percent of its value in 12 months. Yahoo’s failure to keep up with Facebook Inc. and Google Inc. in online advertising led to the ouster of former CEO Carol Bartz and prompted Chairman Roy Bostock and co-founder Jerry Yang to depart. Now the company faces a proxy fight with investor Third Point LLC." http://www.nj.com/business/index.ssf/2012/04/business_news_alcoas_profit_so.html

Controversy

edit

Please take great care when adding to a biography of a living person claims that someone has lied, particularly when the matter could cost them their job and reputation. I've adjusted the following claims:

  1. "was found to have falsely claimed". It's not yet clear that he was responsible for the claim in the biography. Still under investigation.
  2. "he also misled Kara Swisher of AllThingsD about having a bachelor's degree in computer science". Misleading. She said he had one in accounting and computer science as part of a question. With a pause and non-committal word he proceeded to not correct her and answer the main part of her question. While it's unfortunate now, it's also generally considered good practice by interview subjects not to embarrass their interviewer if they want to be invited back to give more interviews. Too much uncertainty about what happened here to say he misled her by not correcting a mistake that she made herself.

The controversy section has come to dominate this biography, which smacks of WP:UNDUE and WP:RECENTISM. It needs to be cut down to one paragraph, two at the most. I will start doing that soon but wanted to start discussion on that approach here. 72Dino (talk) 15:37, 15 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • I agree. Could easily lose the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs, except for the outcome: "On May 13, 2012, Yahoo issued a press release stating that Thompson was no longer with the company, and would immediately be replaced on an interim basis by Ross Levinsohn". As we now know, someone did lose their job and perhaps their reputation over this matter. As a first-time editor, I have a new appreciation for those that attempt to keep these articles neutral and balanced, especially on fast-breaking stories.K4i9dka9.fg3ksaa (talk) 03:07, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
You are certainly right that the other sections need to be expanded (and thank you for adding content), but the controversy section is still too detailed and large. 72Dino (talk) 16:09, 16 May 2012 (UTC)Reply

I'm all for conciseness, but not at the expense of accuracy. It is true that Thompson was found to have falsely claimed to have a degree in Comp Sci.

There is good reason for the controversy section to dominate the biography: it's easily Scott Thompson's main claim to fame. Prior to it, few people recognized his name. Without it, this page would be little more than an ad for Scott and his services.

Particularly now, with the selection of Marissa Mayer at the helm of Yahoo!, and the role of Dan Loeb in her selection as well as the ouster of Scott Thompson, there is plenty of reason to delve into this subject. This isn't a forum for apologists or those who would prefer to dodge subjects.
