Merge of separate Scout and Guide articles to here
editIt is proposed that the two separate articles on Scouting and Guiding be merged into this article. The size of both organizations is small and it is difficult to demonstrate notability. It is unlikely that the single article will grow in the near future to be large enough that demands a fork. See the discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Scouting/Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting task force#United Kingdom outlying Guiding.

Categories
editThe disagreement about categories needs to be resolved here. The problem, to me, appears to be Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar where this article is the only member. All the other categories are parents of this category, and thus should technically be not used on this article. However, since Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar has only one entry, and this is likely to continue, I suggest that it be removed and then deleted as empty. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)
- So you're suggesting removing both parent and child categories? Which leaves us with...? The four categories in question are:
- Category:Girlguiding UK -which it is, as are all other branches
- Category:Gibraltarian society -valid, unless there is a better one
- Category:Overseas branches of Scouting and Guiding associations -which it is, as are all other territories
- Category:Organisations based in Gibraltar -valid, unless there is a better one
I can't buy into the validity of the removal of these for the stated reasons. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 18:49, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- No, I am suggesting leaving those. If Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar is deleted, they are no longer parent categories of another category that is used on the article. We either use Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar and none of its parent categories or we use those four and delete Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar. We should not use all five. Ed created Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar. I wonder what he thinks. I'll ask him. --Bduke (Discussion) 21:39, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar is a subcat of Category:Scouting and Guiding by country, Category:Girlguiding UK, Category:Gibraltarian society, Category:Organisations based in Gibraltar and Gibraltar therefore those categories should not be added to the article. If that was Gibmetal77's reasoning, then it would have been nice to know this instead of all these reversions. We should add The Scout Association to the category as well to balance it out, but I don't see the need to delete Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 22:51, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
- Whatever you guys want to do, but like Gadget850 said, if that was Gibmetal77's reasoning, then it would have been nice to know. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 08:42, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- Well, Ed wants to keep Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar and not use the others. I would prefer to use all the others and delete Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar, at least while there is only one article that can go in this category. Maybe Gibmetal77 can comment. It sounds as if s/he actually comes from Gibraltar. Currently we have all six which is not acceptable. --Bduke (Discussion) 09:46, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with Ed, that was exactly my reasoning. I apologise for not having explained myself at the time - I've been quite ill (still recovering) and didn't have much time online at that moment. --Gibmetal 77talk 14:50, 21 April 2010 (UTC)
- OK, I will move to support Gibmetal77 and Ed, but before we do that, could you comment on the possibility of Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar expanding to hold new articles, and not just the one. I hope you are recovering well. --Bduke (Discussion) 22:09, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

- Sorry you were sick. If it is deleted, and by some circumstance it is needed again, it can be recreated. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 17:21, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- If what is deleted? I suggested deleting Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar, but Ed and Gibmetal77 disagree so there is consensus to keep it. We really are talking about removing this artciel from categories and the consensus seems to be moving to removing it from all except Category:Scouting and Guiding in Gibraltar. Can you live with that? --Bduke (Discussion) 22:30, 22 April 2010 (UTC)
- I can live with anything, now that there is discussion. --Chris (クリス • フィッチュ) (talk) 09:25, 23 April 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'm doing a bit better now. I'd say there's definitely scope for the category to hold new articles. If the sections in this article are expanded sufficiently we could separate it into two (one on the scouts and one on the girl guides. There's also scope for articles on the Gibraltar Sea Scouts, etc. As Chris has agreed I'll make the changes. --Gibmetal 77talk 22:34, 14 May 2010 (UTC)
Defunct packs
editAs a member of the 1/4 scouts in Gib in the 1970s I remember there being several other packs. I seem to recall the 2nd were extant, the 3rd hadmerged with the 5th to be the seas scouts There was an Air scout pack Then the Royal Green Jackets arrived and brought their pack, which I think went open as the 3rd Europa and outlasted the battalion. There might have been one more.
Does anyone have better information including formation / dissolution dates.
I know there were many guide troops but forget the numbering. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.6.99.67 (talk) 22:50, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
