Needs a proper lead section

edit

The article needs a proper intro section per Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Lead section.

I've attempted to redo the reference tags - more needed. Vsmith (talk) 00:37, 21 November 2016 (UTC)Reply

Actual topic?

The lead says it is about measuring depth. Is that not the scope of Bathymetry?

"Seafloor mapping" suggests producing maps of the seafloor, indicating the distribution of whatever data may be of interest to the user. This would often include depth, but not always and not only depth. Expert comment requested. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:41, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bathymetry is measurements of depth, seafloor mapping is how those measurements are taken. There seems a natural division as one is a field, and the other as a suite of tools. [On another note, I don't know how to get the the user tag generating thing so if it doesn't show up under this comment, please advise - allicramer.] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Allicramer (talkcontribs) 16:40, 23 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

It looks like much of the content is on how the measurements of depth are made, which seems to be within the scope of Bathymetry (literally meaning measurement of depth). I would consider that measurement of the position at which the depth is measured is essential for mapping, but not actually mapping until the depth and its position are combined with others in a map, How the measurements are mapped is hardly mentioned at all outside of the lead. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:26, 8 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
