Informing about the candidates

edit

Our job is to inform people. The 2024 election page shows Harris and Trump at the top. Therefore, we are going based on the assumption that one of those two will be sworn in. 192.42.55.22 (talk) 03:10, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Correct on the first sentence. Correct on the second. Incorrect on the third. Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. While we can probably say (cited to a reliable source) that it is likely that Harris or Trump will be the next president, we are not in the business of predicting the future. It would not at all be "inform[ing] people" to assert something as fact when it is within the realm of possibility that it will not occur. We don't even make the assumption that the inauguration will happen at all. That's why we say "is expected to take the oath of office on that day", since no one can give a 100% guarantee that a president will be inaugurated on January 20, 2025. For Wikipedia's purposes, there is a big difference between "almost definitely will happen" and "will happen". -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe) 05:42, 2 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
