Inappropriate tone
editThis article just reads too much like some nerd on MSN simply telling you about Calvin and Hobbes. PsychoJosh 09:35, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Isn't that what we all do in our spare time, though? Frogg220 18 August 2008 —Preceding undated comment was added at 23:30, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- PsychoJosh is right, you know. This article is rife with original research and is not up to Wikipedia standards at all. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.102.59.57 (talk) 03:00, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

editListen I am not trying to dominate this page,or anything,it is just the fact that someone has removed my personal logo I HAVE USED FOR YEARS!Additionally I only tag things I have personally done as a do have a sense of decency.User:LEOnardo
- Wikipedia does not require, encourage or indeed even allow users to sign their contributions within the text of an article. It is considered vandalism. Ramanpotential (talk | contribs) 13:36, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
On a brighter note I would like to ask if anyone would be willing to create a chatroom where calvinics like me can discuss things with other people. User:LEOnardo
- Wikipedia doesn't really get into that. Try Yahoo groups. Feezo (Talk) 03:35, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Re-moving page
editI hate to move a page back to an old title (what with the fear of revert wars and all), but I really think "secondary characters" describes this article better than "minor characters" does. Captain Napalm is minor, but Stupendous Man is a different matter. Anville 07:50, 21 January 2006 (UTC)
Stupendous Man 'canon'
editWhy should the Batman-style Stupendous Man strip not be considered Stupendous Man 'canon'? (If there is such a thing.) Unless this is corroborated elsewhere, I'm taking it out. Surely Calvin's imagination is more important than the actual cape he is wearing? Feezo (Talk) 22:46, 5 March 2006 (UTC)
Merge
editThe merging of more characters into this page is being discussed at Talk:Calvin and Hobbes --OscarTheCattalk 10:56, 13 March 2006 (UTC)
Merge Done
editAll of the secondary characters have been merged here, and CAlvin's alter egos have been taken to the Calvin article. This article needs a lot of cleanup, and a lot of wikilinks fixed. Please give me a hand. Happy editing! - Mike (talk) 05:10, 19 March 2006 (UTC)
Classmates
editRonald, Claire, Clarance and Candace.
Is this correct? Last name was added via an anon user, and I can't remember such a name. --Oscarthecat 11:59, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
I remeber hearing about Candace. She was only mentioned in one strip though. I can't remeber any of the others. - Mike (talk) 18:00, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
- As I recall, Ronald was the victim of Calvin's "invisible cretinizer" prank, and Candace was addressed by Susie during a rare appearance of Stupendous Man in school. I don't remember Claire or Clarance. Feezo (Talk) 01:30, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- Update — confirmed the appearance of Claire on 10-24-93. Feezo (Talk) 03:44, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- What is the context of her appearance? JoshuaZ 04:57, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- The first panel of a Sunday strip where she is addressed by Miss Wormwood before Calvin tells his class about his discovery of the "Calvinosaurus." Feezo (Talk) 05:09, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
- What is the context of her appearance? JoshuaZ 04:57, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Moe
editIs Moe named after Moe Howard of the Three Stooges by any chance? I'm guessing he's not, but in my opinion, he somewhat resembles the Stooge. {unsigned|66.214.200.130}}
- I doubt it. Watterson probably just need a short, one-syllable name for the character he describes as "every jerk I've ever known." Feezo (Talk) 01:25, 14 April 2006 (UTC)
Dad Stuff
editIs it worth mentioning that when they go to a wedding, the mum is in tears of emotion, but the dad is as bored as Calvin? He appears in two boxes at the ceremony. In one he's yawning, in the other he's checking his watch. I think his mental dialogue would be along the sam lines as Calvin's ("I don't even know these people!") This supports the father - son smiliarities thing. Fuzzibloke 09:11, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
- If you can include it so that it just doesn't seem "thrown in there", maybe in a trivia section or something. Maybe if you could upload a few panels from that strip, it would add even more to it. - Mike 14:17, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Susie's mom
editAs I recall, Susie's mom only appears once in the strip, from the knees down, when Calvin stands on the Derkins' doorstep with a water balloon, hoping Susie will answer the door when he knocks. When her mom appears, he's forced to make up a story about "selling water balloons... would you like to buy one?" As for the mentioned appearance, I believe that character is merely the flower shop employee, and not Susie's mom. Eric3K 21:24, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I rember this as well, but i belive that he was going to hit Susie with a snowball not a water ballon, but I think it was Susie's Mother who answered the door. The only time Calvin ever saw a flower shop employee was when he was going to buy Susie a bouquet of dead flowers for Valentines day, "Do you have a dumpster out back I could root through?" or something like that. 71.231.200.70 02:31, 25 October 2007 (UTC)== Calvin Imagining Moes Death ==
I seem to recall a daily strip were Calvin imagins Moe being swalled into the ground and erupting into a fireball of greese or something of that sort after being pushed down by him. Should it be mentioned that Calvin sometimes imagines things like that happing to Moe? Or am I mistaken (no offence will be taken)? ---Azizza 01:26, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
No actually after being pushed down by Moe calvin says this what you said hoping it will happen to Moe but it does not and he just turns around
In the strip where Calvin snuck out of bed pretending to be Spaceman Spiff, one of the guests downstairs might have been Susie's mom. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.105.128.38 (talk) 12:00, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
Uncle Max
editAnyone remember this character that was introduced briefly? I'm adding him. Splent 23:16, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
EDIT: Never mind, I missed him in the "other relatives" section. My bad. Splent 23:21, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Ms Wormwood
editMs Wormwood is styled after a teacher who taught Watterson in Chagrin Falls, friend of mine had her and it's all pretty well played out. I will try to find some evidence for such in the meantime, would you guys want to add it? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 129.174.177.138 (talk) 06:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC).
"After Calvin once declared that school was a big waste of time, she tried catching him while he yelled into the hallway, "Help! It's the Thought Police!"", can someone give the source (e.g. which Calvin and Hobbes book) to this quote? I am personally interested in getting that strip :) --87.184.85.180 ... ok, i got a picture of the strip now -- 87.184.124.106
Susie revamp
editEarlier edit saw a revamp of information regarding young Susie. Not sure it's improved the article though. Hoping to canvas thoughts from other editors here rather than just reverting. --Oscarthecat 08:16, 1 April 2007 (UTC)
I don't understand this re: Calvin's dad
edit"Calvin's father is a patent attorney who is portrayed as an upstanding middle-class father, as his son might see him. Although it has not been comfirmed, [sic] Calvin's dad may be a lawyer, it is mentioned by Calvin in one strip while yelling at his doctor, he may have been just trying to scare him though."
I'm not sure what this means. All patent attorneys are lawyers (but not all lawyers are patent attorneys; you have to have a science/engineering undergrad degree before law school, and want to be in the field thereafter and not some other field of law. Incidentally, once you get your bachelor's in those fields and pass the "patent bar" you can be a patent agent, but not attorney/lawyer, before you complete law school and your full state bar, as the character's inspiration, Watterson's father, did.)
I remember the strip referred to (and there are others where he jokes about "suing" people,) and from what I know IP/patent attorneys usually don't step out of the field into malpractice law (it's not unheard of, but Calvin's lack of understanding about the specifics of his dad's job is reasonable, since not even every mature adult understands different fields of law.)
I was going to remove the 2nd sentence of the above quote altogether because again "patent attorney" and "lawyer" are redundant, but I'll simply change it to reflect the specific branches. --Thermal0xidizer
Is this page needed?
editFor those who have signifigantly contributed to this page, please don't take this the wrong way. I'm just reading over this page and the main page for Calvin and Hobbes, and it seems to me that everything is incredibly well written on that page and provides a nice summary of all the secondary characters of importance. We should delete this article, and merge all the important information over to the main page. It woulden't be hard and i'm perfectly willing to do it in my spare time.
Besides, we don't need to list every funny quotation or multiple ones to prove the points anyway. Zits has a fair amount of recurring characters and that article manages to condense everything one one page without simply restating everything and a little extra on another page. Just my take on this, don't troll me or anything. It just seems this article has a lot of information that is already stated in the main article and most of the extra stuff is just speculation or uneeded information, for lack of better words. Ageofe 03:26, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Yes. Yes. And yes again.
Merger proposal
editPer Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Secondary characters in Calvin and Hobbes, it is proposed that this page and Calvin and Hobbes be merged, though exactly how has yet to be determined. Please discuss this here and come to a consensus on what to do. Thanks! ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 04:40, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Discussion
editDiscussion here.
I have no opinion on the merge (yet), but it would have been nice if someone had posted a message on Talk:Calvin and Hobbes about the AfD before it was closed to draw in potentially interested editors. Anomie 13:30, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Likewise - I've had the main page watchlisted for ages, but had no idea that a deletion process had come (and gone) until the merge tag appeared. --Ckatzchatspy 17:52, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well, you'll have to partially blame the nominator for that (the other part of the blame being on you for not watching the other page... ;-) ). I'm only the messenger. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:27, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- Are you suggesting that it might be worthwhile to reopen the AfD discussion? That is, might the result be different? Given that a new discussion almost certianly will not result in "delete", some discussion could happen here. --Jjamison 15:17, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
- Not sure if your comment was directed at me. I don't think the outcome would have been different, and it wasn't delete. It was "merge and redirect", which is not the same thing as "delete". ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 00:18, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Actually it was just "merge", without specifying whether this should be merged there, or whether that information and any other character articles should be merged with this. Looking over this article though, it needs some serious revising... Anomie 01:09, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Well, regardless of how it's merged, there will be some redirecting. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:38, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, Nihonjoe. No, my comment was not directed at you, but rather the two people before you. I assumed that indenting it at the same level as yours would mean that I was replying to the same thing you were. I am sorry if what I did was unclear. My point was that if people thought that they did not have enough input into the process, then it would be okay to have the discussion over here rather than reopening the AfD, since the only two possible outcomes (in my opinion) are either merge or keep. I know I would not be adverse to a keep result, as long as it was reasoned, nor would I be surprised at such a result. --Jjamison 05:09, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
- No problem. I was just making sure. ···日本穣? · Talk to Nihonjoe 16:38, 21 September 2007 (UTC)
Killer Bicycle
editSince the bicycle is a recurring "character", i think there should be more of an explanation to it than a sentence-long explanation at the very bottom of the page. Is anyone willing to do this (besides me)? Frogg220 (talk) 23:57, 18 August 2008 (UTC)
- I would recommend instead that it be stricken from this page and integrated in the main article, perhaps near the section with the red wagon and sleds? D. J. Cartwright (talk) 04:48, 3 September 2008 (UTC)
Merger not happening?
editSeeing as the last comment was made about this issue a little less than a month ago, is there a reason it hasn't been merged? Having said that, I think it's fine the way it is. First off, let's look at both articles. The main Calvin and Hobbes article is well over the size limit (as someone already pointed out). This article is 40kb in size, also over the size limit. Now if we merge the two articles, and even if we downsize this one substantially, it won't change the fact that the main article will increase in size even more, and most of the information that was in this article will be lost. hypershadow647
- I've removed the templates, given that there has been no discussion in two months. Cleanup remains a good option, however - ti would be nice to see this article at the same level as the main article. Thoughts? --Ckatzchatspy 09:55, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
Why don't we just delete the "Supporting characters" section from the main article and leave this article the way it is. That's what I thought the idea was all along, anyway ... Haplolology Talk/Contributions 15:38, 2 January 2008 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Susie2.jpg
editThanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Susie2.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 18:23, 31 January 2008 (UTC)

Merging with main article
editThe following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
As I understand it, there needs to be CONSENSUS before a change like merging two articles can take place. I don't believe that has happened here. Songwaters (talk) 12:23, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, there does...if there is a dispute. If you don't feel it the articles should be merged, would you please explain why? (And for the record, I am a big Calvin and Hobbes fan, but this article reads like it would be a better fit at Wikia, not here.) Erpert blah, blah, blah... 15:29, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
- Please see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Secondary characters in Calvin and Hobbes - looks like a previous merge was reversed without discussion.PRehse (talk) 15:36, 11 July 2018 (UTC)
