Where lies the boundary between Westmoreland and Sellwood?

edit

Does anybody know anymore? The exact boundary. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.20.46.127 (talkcontribs) 08:33:12, 18 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

I do not know the official boundary, but having grown up and lived in both Westmoreland and Sellwood I can tell you that there is a difference and no local would ever confuse the two or consider them the same neighborhood. Please do not merge the two.

I understand this is a dead discussion but, here is some relevant information.

https://pamplinmedia.com/sb/74-news/268051-142126-drawing-the-line-in-sellwood-and-westmoreland

The Bee gives the historic boundary of Sellwood as basically; the Willamette in the West, Nehalem to the North, 23rd Ave. to the East, and the county line/Ochoco to the South. For Westmoreland the historic boundary consists of Milwaukie ave to the West, Reedway/Yukon to the North, 23rd Ave. to the East, and Malden to the South.

These boundaries leave a fair bit of the modern Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood unclaimed. Anecdotally the boundary for school assignments in the 60's was Lambert street. North went to Llewellyn elementary school in Westmoreland, South went to Sellwood elementary (now middle) school. 50.198.168.113 (talk) 16:17, 21 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Time to close this: I see no clear consensus for a merger between Sellwood, Portland, Oregon, and Westmoreland, Portland, Oregon. -- P 1 9 9   18:37, 9 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

I'm proposing a merger, as I haven't seen enough to establish the verifiability or noteworthiness of "Westmoreland" as a distinct neighborhood. Sellwood and "Westmoreland" are both included in the same neighborhood association, and they're listed on city neighborhood maps as being in the same "Sellwood-Moreland" neighborhood. Nobody even seems to know where one ends and the other begins, and I think any possible line that might be drawn would be entirely arbitrary, as the whole area north of Tacoma and the Sellwood Bridge is residential with low-traffic streets.

If someone can come up with something solid, like some kind of historical documentation of "Westmoreland" being a distinct and separate neighborhood at some time, then I might be persuaded to reconsider. But as it is, it just seems like "Westmoreland" is a name sometimes used for certain parts of this same neighborhood, but it's not even clear which parts they are. I have a feeling "Westmoreland" might be a relatively new name promoted by real estate people in order to associate it with the more upscale Eastmoreland neighborhood across the highway...I could be wrong...but anyway, I think we need more evidence of "Westmoreland" as something separate and distinct for it to have its own article. -Helvetica (talk) 22:15, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Interesting: I lived in Sellwood for several years and always assumed the boundary was a west-east line somewhere around SE Lambert or Lexington streets. Open Street Map shows it is more likely to be a north-south line, perhaps SE 17th or Milwaukie avenues. It could even be a NW-SE diagonal from Oaks Bottom to the Springwater crossing of McGloughlin.. But I don't know of any definitive boundary. Several straightforward searches turned up nothing useful. —EncMstr (talk) 23:26, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

The Portland on-line maps service, portlandmaps.com, in their Explorer/Neighborhood detail, shows boundaries for the Sellwood/Moreland Improvement League. That is the city limit to the south, the Willamette River to the west and McLoughlin Blvd. to the east. (McLoughlin and the Willamette come together to the north. There is no listed "Westmoreland" on the map... just Eastmoreland and Eastmoreland/Reed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.21.175.212 (talk) 21:39, 28 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm a Westmoreland resident, so maybe I'm being irrational, but even though today it's difficult to define a line between the two, they have very different histories. Westmoreland wasn't even established when the town of Sellwood was annexed. At that time "West Moreland" was Crystal Spring Farms. I think a good primer on the history of the area can be found here: http://www.sellwoodwestmoreland.com/swba_history.php . All that said, I couldn't tell you where the line between the 2 neighborhoods is and I started researching it online 7 years ago when I bought a house here in West Moreland (where I'm at is considered by all to be West Moreland, much like anything south of Tacoma is undisputedly Sellwood. It's all those blocks between Bybee and Tacoma that it seems no one is quite sure). As on-line hasn't been fruitful, I'm considering checking into the Portland records to see if they have an original designation of the town of Sellwood and the Crystal Springs Farm. I wouldn't oppose a consolidation as today they are largely indistinguishable from each other, but I'd like to see separate sections on their history, as well as West Moreland added to the title of the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.27.243.220 (talk) 04:04, 16 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

There is a SPECIFIC definition of WestMoreland. When I purchased a home I was given the plot layout of the neighborhood developement called westmoreland from 1910. It is the development bounded by 99e on the east and north. Milwaukie ave to the west and a few blocks north of Tacoma to the south. However, Sellwood and Westmoreland should be considered the same neighborhood as they share the same business league and neighborhood community program, community center, pool, and library. However they do have separate post offices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.78.180.102 (talk) 21:20, 5 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Title

@Another Believer: Is the title supposed to have an en dash? truflip99 (talk) 06:20, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Truflip99, I'm not sure, actually. I don't usually see one used, but I'm also not exactly sure when they are supposed to be used on Wikipedia. ---Another Believer (Talk) 06:25, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
Another Believer Found it. MOS:ENBETWEEN - appears to be yes. Will be moving this page. --truflip99 (talk) 06:31, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Common name

edit

I don't know if a move from the official name of the neighborhood is necessary, but I've lived in Portland for over a decade and people generally refer to the neighborhood as simply Sellwood. Should we at least mention the common name in the lead? ---Another Believer (Talk) 06:58, 30 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
