Clarified

I hope I have not stepped on any toes. I have a doctorate in biophysics from Harvard (meaning I have been certified by some entity other then myself as being excellent at reading comprehension), yet I was unable to understand the introduction. I did some further reading—in Wikipedia, in the Encyclopedia Britannica, and in the Oxford English Dictionary—and then I found an explanatory sentence in Wikipedia that I thought made clear what Semiotics is. So I rewrote the introduction. I believe that what I wrote makes the meaning clear to the layman, i.e. those who have no experience in philosophy, nor linguistics. I have just read the two versions, your latest version, and the previous version. To my understanding your version is not necessarily better. I believe you have emphasized the meaning of the field beyond linguistics properly, but to my taste, the previous version, which gave more of a feel of the wider fields as really originating in linguistics was better. Also, the note giving the Oxford dictionary definition of semiotics in your new version comes only at the end of the third paragraph of the lead, whereas in the original version is appeared right at the end of the very first paragraph.
