Suggestion for improvement or expansion - would be interesting to further explore studies by Lindau and Gavrilova and uncover more details of the female, male differences in sexually active life expectancy L.Flank (talk) 12:22, 3 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

I would like to use content data research from a couple of different peer-reviewed articles on sexually active older adults to expand on this article. Some topics I would be interested in adding to this Wikipedia page includes physical and mental health barriers, patterns of sexual expression in later life, and health professionals' attitudes towards older sexually active people. [1] [2] [3]There are other subjects I would like to include, but I need to do further research.(RachelJohnson11 (talk) 02:11, 6 February 2018 (UTC))Reply

Sexual active life expectancy

edit

Maybe include more citations on ageism to support the claims being made in the section titled: Importance of Intimate Relationships within Institutional settings.

A "Physical Barriers (Preventing Sex) section would round out the article, because it is stated that that is a barrier that has been evaluated through some studies.

The layout of the article is confusing. The headings are all different and do seem to follow any kind of order. The jumping around of the topics is confusing.

Otherwise, good, neutral toned edits. Carolina Banks (talk) 18:09, 7 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

mechanics and other grammatical issues

edit

As of this 23 August 2024 revision, this article has a variety of deficiencies. Some are very fundamental, others are simple English mechanics. Okay, let's go!

  • What does this even mean? The text states that it's the "(average) number of years remaining for a person to be sexually active".
  • The very next sentence is equally perplexing: "This population-based indicator extends the concept of health expectancy to the measure of sexuality (via sexual activity)." So stretching my mind a bit, we're now talking about extending the notion of a standard "health expectancy" to health being considered in terms of "sexual activity expectancy". But that's sure a roundabout way of stating it.
  • "Calculation of sexually active life expectancy uses the age-specific prevalence data on sexual activity in conjunction with life table data ...". Okay, so now you're going to predict how many years of sexual activity a person has left, evidently based entirely on their age and gender (and of course, assuming that they're still sexually active). Now this makes it sound inevitable. Perhaps you're a 62-year-old male who's still sexually active, so you have 5 years left, if you're a 67-year-old male and still sexually active, you might only have 3 years left (I'm just pulling numbers out of the air).

As if this isn't bad enough, it feels as though they've gone out of their way to avoid indicating what they specifically mean by being sexually active.

There's a point in the article when they mention two age ranges, but the age ranges are overlapping. There's no explanation offered, perhaps these age ranges involve two unrelated studies. There are also some "unsurprising" statements, such as "women in substantially good health lived three to six years longer".

These are really basic issues about this article. There are also some English mechanics issues which show a lack of proofreading. Here are examples:

  • Having to live in an assisted living home has also created a physical behavior. (behavior?)
  • The residential care faces possible issues ... ("residential care faces"?)
  • ... especially if they are physically or mentally incapable to protect themselves ("incapable to protect"?)
  • Sexuality has been identified as an important attribute to overall health ... ("attribute to overall health"?)
