Orange disk
editThe big orange disk, probably representing the rising sun of dawn, behind the Shaheed Minar (Dhaka)as seen in the Wiki picture was not part of the original Shaheed Minar nor any part of its creator sculptor Hamidur Rahman's design. It was added much much later by others, in the 1980s or 1990s I think. This addition is controversial, and is opposed by some. The critics consider it to be a distortion of the true spirit of this monument. Besides, the original Shaheed Minar was all white (signifying a state of mourning, I think) -- there were no colours or embellishments, as they are seen nowadays and in the picture (the orange disk and the colours take away the spirit of mourning and gives it a completely opposite air, in my opinion at least). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Monmajhi (talk • contribs)
- The orange disk is a decoration added during special occasions, for example the 21st February Language movement day. True, it is not part of the original design. Nor is it a permanent fixture. We are not bound to show the Shaheed Minar without any festive decorations. Anyway, this was the *only* properly licensed image that could be found. No other image on the web could be added under Creative commons or GFDL. I personally mailed the photographer (Karl Roehl) to get permission to use this image. If you can come up with a better picture with proper license, you are welcome. Thanks. --Ragib 21:55, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
controversies about date
editThere is controversy about the date in which Shaheed Minar was first created. Some say it was built in the very first day of police firing that is February 21.But in his book "Bhasha Andoloner Itihash" Bashir Al Helal did not accept that and proved that day is actually February 23 when the first Shaheed Minar was built. His claim is acceptable because the main planner of first Shaheed Minar also suggested that date. The Daily Azad also published about Shaheed Minar on February 25 which also support that it was actually built on Februay 23 and NOT February 21. Rename to Kendriyo Shohid Minar
editI would like the page to be renamed to Kendriyo Shohid Minar or Central Martyr's Monument. If anyone can look into this? বব২৬ (talk) 08:14, 10 March 2014 (UTC)
Spelling
editBangladesh is in the Commonwealth, so so Commonwealth spelling should be used
- Nope. WikiProject Bangladesh never adopted any guideline for spelling. So per MOS:ENGVAR we can use any style as long as there is a clear WP:ARTCON. -- nafSadh did say 15:35, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: not moved. There is a rough consensus here that the Dhaka monument, while probably the most notable "Shaheed Minar", is not so prominent that it is the clear primary topic, i.e. it does not pass the "much more likely than any other topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined" threshold. – currently we have only two article with same name one in Shaheed Minar, Dhaka, one of the most important monument, indicating the spirit of Language Movement martyrs and symbol of International Mother Language Day. Another Shaheed Minar, Kolkata was entitled as the "Cloud kissing Monument", erected in 1828 in memory of Major-general Sir David Ochterlony , previously known as Ochterlony Monument, reanmed on August 1969 after a good century ,even not a common name and far less significant!!! So THIS should be simply main article! 89.0.125.152 (talk) 00:53, 21 February 2017 (UTC) Relisted. Jenks24 (talk) 06:53, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- Oppose target is a dab page. In ictu oculi (talk) 16:44, 1 March 2017 (UTC)
- support target page redirected to another page named Shahid minar (even wrong transliteration) liste only 2 pages, the original Shaheed Minar and renamed "Cloud kissing Monument", better known as Ochterlony Monument! Shaheed minar concept came from well known Dhaka monument and it should be the main article ! we can create new page like Shaheed Minar (disambiguation) and List of Shaheed Minar for all minor monument and replicas around the world! as far i know each and every university, college and school in Bangladesh have their own Shaheed Minar replica to honor the language movement. http://www.thedailystar.net/country/shaheed-minar-all-pabna-educational-instts-october-1305058 —Ayomoy (talk) 08:58, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- No, target is a dab page. Someone has just moved it but that should be corrected. The Martyrs' Monument in Kolkata, West Bengal has been so known since 1969 and is so described in books. On a geographical feature like this deliberately ambiguating one of them is bound to cause confusion. In ictu oculi (talk) 10:38, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Move per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The most well known (Common) monument when called for as "Shaeed Minar" is in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Google search results of shaheed minar–Ayomoy (talk) 11:38, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

Hello Ayomoy. Both monuments have the same name and both are very well known. The one in Kolkata is also very famous. When we say in Bangla, we always specify which one whether Dhaka or Kolkata.Kiwigravity (talk) 13:11, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
- Comment - I have reformatted this move request so it is clear that the disambiguation page is included in the request as well. Thanks — Amakuru (talk) 12:19, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Amakuru: Be careful about which type of dash you use; requested move reasons must be proceded by an en dash, not a hyphen-minus. Pppery 21:30, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
oppose each monument is important to people in their country. The Kolkata monument is very well known as Shaheed minar to Indians and the Dhaka one is important to Bangladeshi. People in both places speak the same language Bangla which uses the same name for both monument. When browsing the wiki I think it is easier to have the city name and prevent people from being confused Kiwigravity (talk) 13:06, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
- support: As per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC and Pageviews Analysis show that far majority of users looking for Shaheed Minar are looking for the Dhaka one—81.173.227.140 (talk) 13:33, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
Oppose - two countries, two important meanings. Wikipedia has WP:WORLDVIEW. Local impressions about what is most commonly known are not a good guide; we need to take the views of all readers into account. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 22:12, 4 March 2017 (UTC)
- it's not about emotions or nationalistic feeling it's about significance and main topic! –see
- Oppose The argument that the monument in Dhaka is the primary topic has some merit, but fails on two issues. The guideline's first bullet point says:
- A topic is primary for a term ... if it is highly likely—much more likely than any other topic, and more likely than all the other topics combined—to be the topic sought when a reader searches for that term.
- First, as Ayomoy observed, it feels as if every school in Bangladesh and every Bangladeshi community abroad has a shaheed minar. So although the Dhaka monument might be the best known of all, it's difficult to believe that a reader searching for the term would be more likely to be interested in the Dhaka one than in all others combined. It's the difference between plurality and majority. Second, the pageview analysis offered in support of Dhaka being primary is disingenuous. It covers the past 30 days, which includes a major commemoration at the Dhaka monument that takes place every 21 February. The event causes a huge spike for the Dhaka monument article. If one examines page views over a longer period, sometimes Dhaka is more likely, sometimes Kolkata is more likely. Although on average Dhaka is more likely, it isn't clear that it is much more likely than Kolkata to be the desired target. It's the difference between a majority and a super-majority.
- It might be possible to argue that the term shaheed minar has become a broad concept (to Bangladeshis, anyway) meaning any monument to martyrs of the Language Movement. Such a broad concept article might more easily meet the conditions for being the primary topic. Otherwise, wait a few years and then reexamine whether a primary topic has emerged. Bangladesh has the lowest internet penetration in South Asia. As it catches up with Kolkata the search statistics may become more compelling. --Worldbruce (talk) 06:17, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
