editContradiction between this page and the Indian_Rebellion_of_1857 page: This page says he was promoted immediately to Havaldar, while the Indian Rebellion page says "Shaikh Paltu was, however, promoted to the rank of Jemadar in the Bengal Army." While this is not necessarily a contradiction, as he could have been promoted immediately to the NCO rank of Havaldar (native sergeant) and later to the lowest Commissioned Officer rank of Jemadar, this should (if it is in fact correct) be clarified in both articles.
- His immediate promotion to Havaldar is well documented but no reference to his reaching commissioned rank appears in the main sources for this incident. In any event he was murdered a few days before the regiment was disbanded. Buistr (talk) 06:17, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
Repeated unsourced edits
editSince 6 March 2023 this article has been repeatedly amended by an anonymous IP editor using several slightly differing addresses (school computers?). The apparent intention has been to inflate the role played by the "loyal" sepoy Shaikh Paltu in the Mangal Pandey incident immediately prior to the Great Indian Rebellion of 1857. Each time this has involved deleting one or more reliably sourced passages from authoritative publications and inserting unrefenced words or passages. Sometimes the original source reference has been left in place although it no longer supports the statement made. Most recently this has meant taking out a passage of actual testimony given by Shaikh Paltu and quoted in a recently published history. The result is simply misleading vandalism.
Such issues can often be resolved by direct discussion between contributors but in this case a number of warnings on the original user:talk page made by several editors have been ignored. In order to avoid edit warring I will suspend making further corrections but I would ask if a check can be made on this. Buistr (talk) 20:54, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Correction to date given in the first line above - this should read 6 March 2023. Sorry! Buistr (talk) 20:58, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
I wish to make a final request to the anonymous editor who, using differing addresses from the same area, has for six months been making incorrect and unsourced changes to this article, cancelling reliably sourced (RS) entries in the process. This is pointless vandalism unless you provide a new RS to support the amendment. If you have access to relevant history books or documents supporting these changes then please cite them - in which case your new edit will remain in place. The Shaikh Paltu/Mangal Pandey articles relate to an important incident in the history of modern India and should not be the subject of childish games. Buistr (talk) 07:04, 26 September 2023 (UTC)
