Name
editCould Sheng Long's name be what Goutetsu is known by?
- His moveset would hint that, but no it's not.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 21:25, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

WP: VG Assessment
editOkay, this is my first assessment, and I've decided to promote the article to B-class with low importance:
- "Sheng Long is a nonexistent character in the Street Fighter series," Reword to convey that this is a hoax. Describing him as a non-existant SF character is potentially confusing.
- "Sheng Long's appearance was defined in EGM's second usage of the joke in relation to Street Fighter III." Confusing. Reword for clarity.
- Lead should be expanded to be a more comprehensive summary of the article. You know, mention things such as the Capcom April Fools.
- "One of Ryu's win quotes" Win quotes? Cannot it be reworded to celebratory or something better?
- The first paragraph of "official mentions" is merely original research without any sources. Needs citations.
- "confusion: As". Probaly grammatically incorrect according to the WP article: "In English, a colon may be followed either by a capital letter or by a lower case letter, depending on usage: where speech follows, a capital letter is used; where an acronym or proper noun follows, a capital is used; otherwise a lower case letter is used."
- The above sentence does not make sense to me, nor does the concept of embellishing factors which are created and fictional.
- I think "Official mentions" will be confusing to anyone without prior knowledge of the situation. Is full with unverified claims.
- Captions shouldn't have full stops at the end if they're not full sentences.
- "exist (see image, left)" This type of writing is inappropriate for an encyclopaedia. If you feel the reader urgently needs to be directed to this, then include the info in the caption.
- "(Fooled Again, HA - as in haha) " Need I say more?
- "and flocked to Street Fighter II" Watch out for informal phrasing
- "EGM later revealed that Sheng Long was a hoax." When? How many issues later.
- "This was not the end of Sheng Long, though." Again, remember that this is an encyclopaedia.
- "EGM 2007" Doesn't go into rationale or any useful development, but just needlessly goes through details relating to the character himself.
- "Sheng Long is mentioned twice 'Street Fighter: The Movie, in " Proofread to make sure things read properly.
- External links shouldn't be in the main text.
- Acronyms should be spelled out fully or linked for the firt use.
- ""Let's just say that [jokes] that your magazine" Again; proofread before applying to assessment.
- "The post took the tone of a Capcom PR representative trying to announce a character without giving away too many details, hinting that "Sheng Long is Ryu's..." then holding back and saying to wait for an official character announcement." Just bringing this to your attention. I don't think I need to say more.
Sources:
- When Japanese sources are used, you need to use "|language=Japanese|" in the source.
- Sources need to state the publisher eg. Capcom in ref 1.
- References need information such as author, retrieval date, publisher and date.
- Magazine refs needs to be formatted properly, including the page name, author, and page title.
Generally lacking citations throughout, which make some of it appear as OR. Needs expansion on the hoax's general reception from the public and other publishers, as touched upon in the last few sentences. Need to eliminate any unecyclopaedic tone and unverifiable speculation. Despite this, there is a decent level of coverage considering the nature of the article. Great use of images. SNES influence
editI don't see how the SNES port (or more specifically, whoever wrote the English manual) could've influenced the Sheng Long hoax, considering the issue was published on April 92 and the SNES version came out in Japan on July (and the month afterwards in North America). If anything, it might be the other way around.[1]Jonny2x4 (talk) 04:15, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
It is a lie that manga started in 1993.
edithttp://www.7andy.jp/books/detail/-/accd/07646885 (tankobon in 1993)
「A character named Gouken was later introduced in Masaomi Kanzaki's 1993 Street Fighter II manga as Ryu and Ken's sensei.」
1993 year is year when the release of tankobon was begun. It is described that manga started in 1991. (item of Japanese Wikipedia gouken)(218.230.180.15 (talk) 15:16, 3 December 2008 (UTC))
GA Review
edit- This review is transcluded from Talk:Sheng Long/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
Overall, the article looks good, and I was surprised this much content was out there for such an obscure video game topic. However, I found few issues with it that need to be addressed before passing GA.
- It is reasonably well written.
- a (prose): b (MoS):
- The main issue I have with the article is the grammar and MOS.
- a (prose): b (MoS):
- There are several abbreviations and acornyms used in the article which are not written out for their first instance: Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM).
- Sentence sound a bit awkward and need some tweaking: "Because of Ryu's win quote rumors about Sheng Long actually being in the game spawned..."
- Phrases and words like "however" and "in addition" should be followed with a comma.
- I don't think moves like Spinning Bird Kick and Dragon Punch should be italicized. The Shoryuken is fine because it is a Japanese word, but the other should probably be in quotes instead.
- Peacock words:
- "...actually being in the..."
- "...altered their story just to include the character."
- The Street Fighter: The Movie section needs some tweaking. The first instance of the game's name should be wikilinked and include mention that it is an arcade game. Also, two sentences make for a short paragraph. Maybe combine the two together.
- It is factually accurate and verifiable.
- a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
- Can you provide reliability for Michael McWhertor's Kotaku articles?
This is not an issue that will fail the article, but I noticed Cite templates are only partially used. I would use them for the magazines and website to create consistency.
- Can you provide reliability for Michael McWhertor's Kotaku articles?
- a (references): b (citations to reliable sources): c (OR):
- It is broad in its coverage.
- a (major aspects): b (focused):

- Some issues, most are minor though.
- a (images are tagged and non-free images have fair use rationales): b (appropriate use with suitable captions):
- I'm not sure if the headshot in the lead is needed since the second joke shows what he looks like already.
- I would expand the FUR of the images and explain what parts of the images add to the article. If you have the issue and page numbers of the magazines, that would be great to add to the image pages.
- I would also expand the captions more; this is kind of linked to the FUR too.
- Overall:
- Pass/Fail:
- On hold for now.

The recent changes to the article have convinced me the article now meets the GA criteria. Any remain issues, are minor and do not significantly detract from the quality. If you feel that this review is in error, feel free to take it to a GA review. (Guyinblack25 talk 21:16, 16 January 2009 (UTC))
I don't quite understand the mistranslation
editYes, when I first played the arcade game, I thought there was going to be someone named Sheng Long I would eventually fight (I thought my defeated opponents were saying that to ME) then when I beat Bison, I saw there was no such person. But, this confuses me.
"changing the Japanese quote "If you cannot overcome the Rising Dragon Punch, you cannot win!" (昇龍拳を破らぬ限り、おまえに勝ち目はない!?) to "You must defeat Sheng Long to stand a chance."
How did it get changed to Sheng Long? Why did Capcom, when they made the English arcade version use Sheng Long instead of Dragon Punch? It would have been translated from Japanese to English, Sheng Long was Chinese not Japanese. I hope this can be clarified a little better. 66.189.37.204 (talk) 05:35, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
