Only 40 men and 11 women had accepted Islam in the first six years of the mission of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam. However, by the time of his Farewell Pilgrimage at the end of his full 23 years of mission, 124,000 companions had accepted Islam.

The Battle of Badr is the most important battle in the whole of human history as it firmly established Islam as the only true religion for the whole of humanity till the end of time. It took place on 17 Ramadan 2 A.H, 624 C.E. The beloved holy Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, together with 313 of his Sahaba (Companions) and angels sent by Allah defeated about 1000 better armed polytheists of the tribe of Quraysh.
Fourteen Muslims were martyred, of whom 6 were Muhajirin (Muslims of Makka who had migrated to Madina), and 8 were Ansar (Muslims of Madina who helped the Muhajirin settle in Madina). Of the 8 Ansar, 6 were from the tribe of Khazraj, hence called al-Khazraji, and 2 were from the tribe of Aws, hence called al-Awsi. Their names have been given above in alphabetical order, following the Arabic alphabet.
Asmâ’ ahl Badr Muslim warriors of the battle of Badr
According to the Ahadith in Jami' us-Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari (Vol. 5, p. 201, Hadith Numbers 292-294), the number of warriors in the Battle of Badr were more than 310 of whom more than 60 were the Muhajirin (from Makkah) and more than 249 were the Ansar (from Madina). According to scholars of sirah (history, biography), 313 companions took part in the Battle of Badr of whom 82 were the Muhajirin and 231 were the Ansar (61 Awsi and 170 Khazraji). Wallahu A'lam (Allah Knows Best).
The number of Companions that are normally listed in Classics of Muslim Spirituality are more than those who actually took part because there are some Companions who were considered by the Holy Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam to be Ahl Badr (The Warriors of Badr) even though they were not actually present because they were sent by him on special assignments elsewhere at that time.
Another reason why the list is greater than 313 is that in some instances, Muslim historians and the ‘ulama (the learned) are not absolutely sure from the evidence they have collected whether a particular Companion was actually present at Badr or not. So, perhaps they have decided to err in including the name rather than to err in leaving it out. For that reason perhaps, Imam ibn Kathir lists 321, Imam al-Barzanji lists 368, Mawlana Khalid al-Baghdadi lists 366, Shaykh 'Abdur Rahman Chohravi mentions 357, Shaykh Mustafa Rushdi ad-Dimishqi has 356 while Shaykh ‘AbdurRahman al-Azhariyy has 385. Incidentally, the Imam al-Barzanji cited here is the same Imam al-Barzanji who composed the famous Mawlid (Birth of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam), named after him as the Mawlid al-Barzanji.

The men and women Companions known as the memorizers of Qur'an (al-qurra') were: 1. Sayyidina Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (51 B.H-13 A.H; 573-634 C.E) 2. Sayyidina ‘Umar al-Faruq (40 B.H-23 A.H; 584-644 C.E) 3. Sayyidina ‘Uthman Dhun-Nurayn (47 B.H-35 A.H; 577-656 C.E) 4. Sayyidina ‘Ali al-Murtada (23 B.H-40 A.H; 600-661 C.E)
However, Abu Bakr and `Umar died before memorizing it completely, while `Uthman and `Ali were among those who gathered(jama`a) the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. `Uthman was one of those who used to recite the entire Qur'an in one day and night. 5. `Abd Allah ibn Mas`ud -- Allah be well pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. 6. Salim, Mawla Abi Hudhayfa -- Allah be well pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. 7. Mu`adh ibn Jabal -- Allah be well-pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. 8. His class in the mosque of Damascus counted 1,600 students, each ten with one monitor. If a student made a mistake the monitor corrected him, and if the monitor made a mistake Abu al-Darda' corrected him. 12. Abu Musa al-Ash`ari -- Allah be well-pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. 13. `Abd Allah ibn `Amr ibn al-`As -- Allah be well-pleased with him. He was ordered by the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him -- to recite it in no less than seven days. 14. Talha ibn `Ubayd Allah -- Allah be well-pleased with him. 15. Sa`d ibn Abi Waqqas -- Allah be well-pleased with him. 16. Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman -- Allah be well-pleased with him. 17. Abu Hurayra -- Allah be well-pleased with him. He was examined by Ubay. 18. `Abd Allah ibn al-Sa'ib -- Allah be well-pleased with him. He was examined by Ubay. 19. `Abd Allah ibn `Umar -- Allah be well-pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him. 20. `Abd Allah ibn `Abbas -- Allah be well-pleased with him. Tamim al-Dari -- Allah be well-pleased with him -- one of those who gathered the Qur'an in the time of the Prophet -- Allah bless and greet him -- and who used to recite the entire Qur'an in one day and night. When the above are added to the seventy Ansar who were killed in the battle of Yamama against Musaylima the Arch-Liar, and who were all memorizers of the Qur'an (qurra') [Bukhari and Muslim], the number of the Companions who had memorized the Qur'an rises to over a hundred. This number excludes the numerous Companions -- whether named or unnamed -- whose status of memorizers did not reach us through isnad, as well as the women of both the Muhajirin and the Ansar. All of this memorizing was mass-transmitted. The numbers of the next generations, of course, keep rising exponentially in identical fashion of transmission, and praise belongs to Allah.
