Fair use rationale for Image:Shibboleth-logo.jpg

Image:Shibboleth-logo.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Federations

I don't know if it's a good idea to mention federations here like that, and to include a list at the bottom. It suggests that they are using Shibboleth, while most of them are using just any SAML-enabled software.

Also, I've removed the sentenced about the amount of users. It's terribly outdated, and also quite ambitious to calculate (I don't even think it's possible to give accurate numbers federation-wide, not to speak worldwide). 193.71.107.218 (talk) 14:19, 17 July 2013 (UTC)

feide.no

Internet standard?

Surely SAML is the internet standard here - Shibboleth is [merely] an implementation of that standard so shouldn't really be categorised as such. Darth Andy (talk) 09:56, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Readability

Would anyone care to simplify this almost un-parsable sentence from the second paragraph?

The Shibboleth Internet2 middleware initiative created an architecture and open-source implementation for identity management and federated identity-based authentication and authorization (or access control) infrastructure based on Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML).

I can parse it just fine, and understand exactly what it is saying. I'm possibly not the best person to judge it, however, as I'm more or less a subject matter expert (of the general area, not this specific instance). I'm not sure how it can be simplified, while retaining information and accuracy. It is a technical thing, and the article needs to retain an accurate description for technical audiences. I feel that the opening paragraph provides a reasonably simple statement for the layman, so am not terribly concerned if it becomes too technical after that. When you as a subject matter expert read this article, you are supplying the "accurate description for technical audiences" which this article lacks. A Wikipedia article is an introduction to the subject. After reading this article I cannot say for certain what Shibboleth is. Is it a protocol? Is it an implementation of SAML? Is it an extension of SAML? Who created it? What is the MACE working group? How is it different from other web single-signon systems such as OpenID? Which of the definitions of "federation" in the first paragraph is correct?

The technical descriptions are too obscure for a non-expert to understand and not precise enough for an expert to find them particularly informative. They are marred by poorly defined terminology and vague slangy phrases such as "The user is POSTed to the assertion consumer service of the SP." Numbers and Usage Statistics

As mentioned above it is notoriously difficult to get good usage statistics, but it would be useful if someone has a source that talks about how Shibboleth is being used in 2017. Does anyone have a good source? Alex Jackl (talk) 19:13, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
