Statue of Henry V

edit

I propose that the article at Statue Henry V Monmouth (which should in any case be renamed) be merged into this article. It seems to me that the content is never likely to be more than a stub, and I doubt whether the statue itself is sufficiently notable to justify a standalone article. Most of the current text refers either to the king, or to the sculptor Charles Peart (who now has his own article). This Shire Hall article itself is worthy of some expansion. Please add any comments below. Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:44, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

No opposition, so I have made the move. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:13, 9 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

First QRpedia code and online stats

edit

Picture of the first "temp" QR code

The first Monmouthpedia code was installed in Monmouth on the front of the Shire Hall and it was filmed by BBC Wales. Statistics on when this code is scanned are available here. When will be the first scan by a Frenchperson? Victuallers (talk) 14:46, 8 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Chartist Trial

edit

The thing to me that seems most missing in this article is more information on the chartist trial, will try to start something, help would be appreciated. Mrjohncummings (talk) 22:56, 19 April 2012 (UTC)Reply

I added some more information, but in my opinion this article should not be overwhelmed by details about the trial, its background and implications, however important that trial was. This article is, essentially, about the building. It seems to me that, to do justice to the trial, a new article should be created, say at R v John Frost and others (similar to, say, R v Dudley and Stephens), which should be linked from this article (and other articles). What do others think? Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:10, 17 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
This seems the best way to do it, not sure about the title as I don't know enough about the trial, I know someone wrote a lot about it which got reverted, will start with this --Mrjohncummings (talk) 18:36, 13 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Pictures and videos

edit

Way too many pictures and not at all sure we need the Trial video segments either. Shall trim if there is no opposition.KJP1 (talk) 17:36, 8 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Finding the video appears in Chartism, I've taken it out. I completely agree that a separate article about the trial would be very useful.KJP1 (talk) 17:48, 8 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Update and images

edit

Shall be updating this shortly, to reflect the hall's planned use as the new home for the Monmouth Museum. Shall also take the opportunity to trim (quite heavily) the number of images, of which there are rather too many. Very happy to discuss any concerns here. KJP1 (talk) 09:01, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Apropos this, we have a mix of citation styles. Any objections to my sfn'ing the lot? KJP1 (talk) 09:53, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

The mysterious Philip Fisher

edit

I'd also be interested in seeing if anything more than a stub could be made for Philip Fisher (1702-1776), the building's architect. The Cadw listing for this says that:

  • he lived in Monmouth, though the very limited references tie him to Bristol;
  • that a portrait of him exists in the Shire Hall, which is his "only known building";
  • that he designed it aged only 22, which seems rather implausible (OR!);
  • that a memorial to him exists in St Mary's Priory Church, Monmouth where the Cadw listing gives his dates as (1702-76) and describes him as the "supposed architect of the Shire Hall".

I've never seen either the portrait or the memorial, and photos of both would be great, if any editors could obtain them. And are there really no other sources of information about him? I shall take a look in Howard Colvin's Dictionary of British Architects, 1600–1840, when I can get it out of the boxes. KJP1 (talk) 10:12, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
