Wikipedia isn't a joke forum

While I don't doubt this article should exist, I think the list of variations on the "shit happens" joke is highly inappropriate for Wikipedia. At most, these jokes should be referred to by a link to an outside website. The Wikipedia is not an internet joke forum, but an encyclopedia. COGDEN 00:23, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)

It would be much better if, like the "You have two cows" and List of "You have two cows" jokes articles, the "Shit happens" jokes are moved to a separate List of "Shit happens" jokes article. If something is entitled "List of..." you expect to see a list. But when readers look up "Shit happens" in a dictionary, they expect to see things like where the slogan originated, what it means, etc.--in other words, information about "shit happens". They don't, on the other hand, expect to see information about jokes about "shit happens". What would happen if half of the Computer science article were devoted to computer nerd jokes? The problem is, they just don't fit there. But on the other hand, they might fit in an article entitled List of computer nerd jokes (although I personally think that would be better moved to Wikisource). COGDEN 06:45, Nov 16, 2004 (UTC)

The difference is "Computer Science" in and of itself is not a humorous phrase, while "Shit Happens " is.--Naughtius Maximus   F@H Woof!  MeowMUN 15:20, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Ahm, im sorry but i dont know how to format the list. I think it whould be nicer if there was a "List of "Shit Happens" instead of having it in the Shit Happens article.

Wikipedia isn't a joke forum - Maybe, but (sh)it happens... --Lardarse 01:34, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

I can't believe "Shit doesn't happen - assholes cause it" made it to the article. There I was thinking it'd be taken as defacing wiki... I wonder when wiki will realize the more articles the better, jokes or not. Also in the later edit contributed by Naughtyned - I dispute the meaning of asshole. To me it means "people". We're all assholes at times. *sigh* 220.233.75.216 05:52, May 05, 2009 (UTC)

"assholes" section removed as unreferenced.- Altenmann >t 16:37, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

Whose national tv?

It was used for the first time on national television... Whose national tv is meant here? Since it isn't mentioned, I suppose the US (assuming the US have a national tv). But it could also mean 'any national tv' (In the world). So which is it? DirkvdM 19:06, 24 January 2006 (UTC)

Though I realize that some countries have official government-supported channels, for the most part when people in the US refer to "national television" they're referring to television broadcast nationally (as in, nation-wide), not necessarily television supported by the national government. Of course, it still does beg the question of which nation... :P 68.18.55.19 (talk) 00:15, 7 February 2009 (UTC)

Etymology

An etymology would be really good. Unfortunately, I can't give anything more than a conjecture that it's a corruption of "it happens"; seems reasonable, but many 'reasonable' etymologies are wrong. 128.232.250.254 21:43, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

while we're making reasonable guesses, i am assuming that it came from the etymology of 'shit' coming to mean something like 'unpleasant event' -- "a shitty day" etc. i doubt the phrase itself went through any particular evolution, it's just a catchy simple way of stating the concept. --dan 09:31, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

same shit, different day

i just removed In 2006, American Eagle Outfitters released a t-shirt that reads, "Same shirt, different day". The "r" in "shirt", was faded out, however, alluding to the aformentioned phrase, "shit happens". This may be a reference to the Stephen King novel Dreamcatcher, which features "Same Shit, Different Day" as a repeated line. "same shit, different day" is a phrase in its own right and i don't see how it relates to "shit happens" at all, other than that they contain the word shit. neither phrase (nor the shirt) is referring to the other, nor to Dreamcatcher for that matter. --dan 09:34, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

Stuff happens

I think some American military politician used this phrase during the first Gulf War. 92.29.114.99 (talk) 21:21, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

Relevance?

Gump replied "Sometimes"; and the slang was created.[4] Actually this is not probable due to the fact that in Predator 2, from 1990 thee phrase was already used by the City Hunter.

What the hell does that have to do with anything? 184.79.140.196 (talk) 01:45, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

It seems that someone took the statement that Forrest Gump (the character of the movie) created it a little took literally. 75.148.220.25 (talk) 15:56, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Ante 1982, not 1983

Original research of course, but [1] gives a match from ISBN 9780961617202, 1982. --Nemo 11:05, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
