editDoesn't he have a surname? -- Zoe
The surnames are never used and no-one in the circles of Chabad Lubavitch or Hasidic Judaism or amongst Jewish Orthodox people, refers or knows them by their surnames. But if you do some deeper research some did have "family names" that often changed and varied in pronounciation. I am relying on biographies published by the Lubavitchers and this is how the names are always used. Except in the case of the last two Rebbes; one used Schneersohn (with an "h" at the end} , and his son-in-law used Schneerson (without an "h" ).IZAK
See entry for Schneersohn / Schneerson IZAK
- he was called mostly the Maharash more than R.Shmuel (i add to the article). : Chmouel 23:33, 8 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I updated this article now (14 Dec '04) to reflect Wikipedia naming conventions, and it is legitimate to call this rabbi, Rabbi Shmuel Schneersohn, and also, provide the various other names he may have been known by. IZAK 06:28, 15 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Date of Birth
editAccording to the hebrew page, he is born on the 2 of Iyar 5554, which means 11 of May 1834 in Gregorian calendar, and end of April in Russian calendar. Not compatible with 17 march 1834 on this page. May be there is a confusion with the date where he became Rabbi, which is 17 march 1866 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobouh (talk • contribs) 18:49, 3 December 2017 (UTC)
