Expansion work

Expansion request: we need a list of winners. Possibly modeled on the table in Kodansha Manga Award. BTW, in case my rationale for wikilinking isn't clear, if I find that somewhere on Wikipedia, someone has already wikilinked to a empty article on the mangaka or title, I've been wikilinking it here as well -- by way of showing it's already recognized as a wikigap. Next expansion task: full out that stub of an introduction, with an emphasis on bringing out the prestiege of this award. Award for person or work?

Can somebody clarify whether the award is given to the artist (for the work(s) cited) or the work (identified with the artist)? I ask, because the citations in the German Wikipedia article are to the artist, not to the work as we're doing here. Other references about the Web are similarly ambiguous, and I alas cannot check the official site to confirm one way or another. —Quasirandom 07:30, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Catching up on citations

As a result of this AfD, I'm starting a pass to reference all the awards in the recipiant articles. Which I should have done when I added mentions in the articles. Along the way, I plan to create stubs of all the mangakas without articles, as best I can. Shogakukan Manga Award box for each Category

Most of the Shagakukan manga award winner's ja page have a Shogakukan Manga Award box for each Category. Wonder if we could make a similar system? Extremepro (talk) 08:14, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

A succession box, those seem to be called. The style on English wikipedia is to use those more for political offices. For awards significant enough where every winner can be defined as notable for having won it, the style seems to be a navbox linking to all the winners -- and that's a whole lotta redlinks right now, which are seriously frowned upon in navboxes. To be honest, I don't think we're ready to be thinking about it -- a bigger priority would be to work on developing articles. —Quasirandom (talk) 15:54, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

Categorisation

Wonder if we could make a [[Category:Winner of Shogakukan Manga Award (Shōnen)]] and so on for the winner of the award? I'm basing this on the "Category:Winner of Kodansha (category)" system. Mangaka name check please

This article lists the mangaka of the Tale of Genji that won in 1989 as Miyako Maki; the The Tale of Genji (manga) that is linked to is listed as by Waki Yamato. Does the article get the name wrong (misreading of kanji perhaps?) or are these two different series? —Quasirandom (talk) 14:26, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

Two different series - the manga linked is not even called the Tale of Genji in Japanese. Far more disturbing is the Japanese list of winners, which has these titles listed in 1988, and the awards around them off a year from ours. Yikes. Doceirias (talk) 15:24, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

The Year Issue

The disagreement seems to be over whether the year is when awarded in January or the publication in the year before. Currently, the list matches the English language source in the References. —Quasirandom (talk) 02:17, 17 December 2009 (UTC)

Awards are given in January for the best comics produced during the preceeding year. The Japanese references don't list any year for the prizes (only "first time", "second time" and so on). One site[2] states that it was established in 1955 (この賞は健全明瞭な少年少女向け漫画の振興をはかるため、昭和３０年に設けられました。). (212.247.11.156 (talk) 19:13, 20 December 2009 (UTC))

And the answer is given in the discussion on the talk page at Japanese Wikipedia... Basically, there's a piece of text on Shōgakukan's web site that I didn't notice. Japanese Wikipedia talks about the situation back in 2007, but I'm using the current (2009) text. On an image, it says "Shōgakukan's 55th comics prize (year 2009)" (第５５回（平成２１年度）小学館漫画賞, Dai gojūgo kai (Heisei nijūichi nendo) Shōgakukan mangashō). So the 55th prize is the 2009 prize, and the 55th prize is the one that will be presented in January 2010.

By the way, I really think that Wikipedia should number the prizes from 1 to 54 in the list in this article. At least on Japanese web sites, the prizes usually seem to be referred to by the number and by the year. (212.247.11.156 (talk) 19:24, 20 December 2009 (UTC))

Since Shōgakukan's image lists the prizes by the years during which the comics were first published, I have adjusted the table to show these years. I have also added a comment above the table, explaining what the years mean. Various sources (for example Shōgakukan's list of the laureates) list the prizes by numbers and not by years.
