article name
editShouldn't this article, and Shorts 360 actually be at Short 330 and Short 360 ? Isn't "Shorts" just a colloquialism for the company name "Short Brothers", whose products are known as "Short" (i.e. Short Belfast, Short Sunderland, Short Stirling.) Emoscopes Talk 02:02, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- It's confusing, but no. From their early beginnings, products of Short Brothers, later (1936) Short Brothers and Harland were known as Short xxx, e.g. Short S.35 Shetland. By the late 1960s the company was in financial difficulties. They were acquired by Bombadier who (I think) ran the company for a while as Short Brothers plc. Certainly this outfit was taken over by Bombadier in October 1989. "Shorts" is a Bombadier tradename, used thereafter. So before 1967, certainly Short xxx; after 1988, certainly Shorts zzz.
A bit more reading would fill in the gap, e.g. JAWAs 1969-1987 eds. and give a date for the name change.
Certainly there's confusion (unsurprisingly) across WikiP. I got here by trying to find the Short (S.B.4) Sherpa but getting the Shorts Sherpa (330 variant), two very different aircraft.TSRL (talk) 22:12, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
- A little more digging shows that pre Bombadier takeover in 1989, Short Brothers plc were state owned. so maybe my notion of earlier Bombadier involvement was wrong. Should this discussion be transferred to the company article?TSRL (talk) 09:23, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- Despite the previous comment which might make one think 1989 was when the name Shorts appeared, the Observers book of aircraft, 1980 edition features the Shorts 330. The 1969 edition has the then in production Short Skyvan. So we are down to a decade in which the name is uncertain. Someone out there must know!TSRL (talk) 09:40, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
- I've redirected Shorts Sherpa to Short Sherpa, where there's a DAB header directing one to the C-23 Sherpa page. This should work for the time being. As to whether or not "Shorts" should be used, I've seen the modern types listed under "Short" in some references, and "Shorts" in others. As long as proper redirect pages are set up, it should not be a problem having them all under "Short". Frankly, I prefer "Shorts", but for consistency's sake, I'm OK with "Short". I saw no need to rock the boat on so minor an issue as an "s". If you need some help correcting any redirect pages to make sure they point to the right articles, I'll be happy to lend a hand. - BillCJ (talk) 11:00, 20 November 2008 (UTC)
Silence of the Lambs
editI'm not sure this is encyclopedic (Wikipedia doesn't like trivia sections), but I just noticed that the 330 is the plane used in The Silence of the Lambs to transport Hannibal Lecter to Memphis International Airport to meet Senator Ruth Martin (happens about 64 minutes into the movie). - G, I have to think you were right in your first analysis; a fleeting use of the Short 330, is just that, not a very notable episode. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:38, 23 May 2009 (UTC).
