Merger

edit

I would suggest that, per Naming Conventions, we merge NASA Shuttle Landing Facility into Shuttle Landing Facility rather than the other way around. - more common usage, unneccisary disambiguation --GW_Simulations|User Page | Talk | Contribs | E-mail 19:26, 21 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

The result of the debate was no move, since there seems to be no particular clamour for it and the current title is unambiguous. The result of the debate was PAGE MOVED per reasonable and well-argued request, previous request was unopposed. If somebody objects, let them say so and we can talk about it then. -GTBacchus(talk) 00:24, 22 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

NASA Shuttle Landing FacilityShuttle Landing FacilityWP:NC states that the most common form should be used. This is clearly Shuttle Landing Facility not NASA Shuttle Landing Facility. If you look at the pages that link here, then, excluding those that link through Template:Merritt Island (edit | talk | history | links | watch | logs), most link to Shuttle Landing Facility. A quick Google search confirms this - 655 results for the phrase NASA shuttle landing facility [1] vs 92,100 for shuttle landing facility[2]. Sadly, Shuttle Landing Facility has a history, so I cannot move this myself. Note: my last request for this move was unopposed, however it was never implemented. Question About Shuttles

edit

How do they get the shuttles back to KSC? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.16.151.77 (talk) 20:45, 10 May 2007 (UTC).Reply

Runway naming

edit

Isn't it a bit strange that the runway is 15 and 33? shouldn't it be 15 and 30-31, or 16-17 and 33? 09:34, 31 May 2007 (UTC)

What is strange about it? The runway is aligned northwest/southeast (330 degrees northwest/150 degrees southeast). Fl295 18:58, 31 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Gator tanning facility"

edit

Sounds like a hoax to me. --20% 00:04, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

While I don't see an online reference for the specific term, the style sounds consistent with NASA worker nicknames and should be non-controversial. It had to be called the "gator <something> facility". Undeveloped areas of KSC are a wildlife refuge, including literally thousands of alligators. There is indeed a well-documented problem with clearing alligators off the Shuttle Landing Facility runway before a shuttle landing. When I've visited Central Florida, I noticed that alligators and lightning rods have something in common: once you notice one of them, you notice that they're everywhere. Sorry, I don't doubt the nickname as such, I just haven't found evidence that alligators regularly stay on the actual runway (as opposed to the surroundings). But that seems fine now ;-) Thanks. --20% 23:45, 7 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

City Location

edit

It says in Merrit Island, but merrit island is located more south of it. i think it is more in Titusville because the visitor center is south of that and it is in titusville. Parker1297 (talk) 16:13, 22 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

What year did it open? 1992? 99.151.253.124 (talk) 19:07, 8 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

First landing?

edit

Just curious about one thing--I know STS-41B was the first orbital mission to land at the Shuttle Landing Facility, but was this also the first time an Orbiter landed there? Did NASA do any kind of aproach and landing test before using the facility "for real?"--Craigkbryant (talk) 20:20, 18 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Gator tanning facility"

edit

I have added a "failed verification" tag to the claim that the facility is also known as the "gator tanning facility." If we can't find a source for this, I think it should be removed. CapitalSasha ~ talk 00:40, 16 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
