Schleswig-Holstein

edit

@GiantSnowman: The category does not imply he's German, only that he is a footballer from Schleswig-Holstein. As Category:Footballers from Schleswig-Holstein states, it is "a list of footballers who were born in Schleswig-Holstein", not German footballers from Schleswig-Holstein. S.A. Being born somewhere does not mean that you are 'from' there. Why is the category not named 'born in' if that is its scope? GiantSnowman 16:00, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
@GiantSnowman: That seems like a much broader discussion on category naming/scope. Either way, the category is not only for Germans, but rather all footballers. As he's categorised under Category:People from Flensburg, this should be accompanied by Category:Footballers from Schleswig-Holstein. S.A. Julio (talk) 16:35, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
That category is also wrong. I'm not saying non-Germans can't be in this category, I'm saying that it does not apply to this person based on the evidence we have. GiantSnowman 16:38, 28 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Alright, the Flensburg category was originally added by ArbieP, maybe they have something to add? However, I don't see the issue with categorising someone by their city of birth, it seems to be included in the category scope. Exactly what "evidence" is required, where is the line drawn? Should city categories be removed from Edgar Davids, Gonzalo Higuaín, Samuel Umtiti, Ivan Rakitić, Thiago Alcântara, etc? This seems as though a larger discussion is required. S.A. I'm mentioned above because in March this year I edited and expanded the list of Flensburg#Notable people. I mainly did it by reference to Category:People from Flensburg. I see that there is narrative at the top of Category:Footballers from Schleswig-Holstein which says "A list of footballers who were born in Schleswig-Holstein". For me this definition is too tight. I feel I am from several places, where I was born, where I grew up, where I have lived for long periods and where I live now. This broader definition reflects the general approach in Wikipedia to lists of people from a town, village or city. The section may be called "Notable people" or "Notable residents" or even "Sons and daughters of the town" but for me the people who follow are from there - meaning they are closely associated with the place, by birth, education or residence. So, I prefer the broad definition.

I would amend the narrative at the head of Category:Footballers from Schleswig-Holstein from "were born in" simply to "from" and add Mr Jørgensen to both his categories. Thankyou for asking me to contribute, I hope it is helpful.

If you agree that these kind of categories reflect where somebody grew up (and not where they were born) then why should this person be in them? What evidence dp you have he was raised there? GiantSnowman 17:42, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

You've not followed what I said. I'm happy for ANY of the categories (birth, education or residence) to indicate where he comes from. If you follow reference 6 it confirms he was born in Flensburg. That's enough for me to know where he comes from and so, for him to be in the two categories referred to above. ArbieP (talk) 20:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

No, I have exactly followed what you said. What reliable source are you using to say that he is from there? What if he was born while his parents were on holiday and he returned to Denmark the next day? GiantSnowman 07:34, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

We are going around in circles. My source for saying he comes from Flensburg is his Wiki page and its citations which confirm that he was born there. Your issue, seemingly, is that (to quote you from above) Being born somewhere does not mean that you are 'from' there. I disagree, it one of several ways people use to identify themselves and their origins. Thankyou for the conversation. ArbieP (talk) 10:44, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
