The following statement, already requesting cite is probably outdated, but regardless may not contribute to the overall value of this article:

"An alternative approach is point-to-point data updates, but these become exponentially more expensive to maintain as the number of systems increases, and this approach is increasingly out of favour as an IT architecture."

With the advent of Semantic Web Technology and it's general adoption as an emerging trend, it is actually probably not true. Regardless, I recommend the deletion of this line as it is both un-cited and expresses opinion - without adding significant value to an otherwise fine article.

Broken reference
