editThe Sisters In Islam, or SIS for short, initially comprised of 8 professional women (Amina Wadud, Askiah Adam, Norani Othman, Rose Ismail, Salbiah Ahmad, Sharifah Zuriah Al-Jefri and Zainah Anwar), was formally launched in 1991. For almost 10 years it remained a study group focused on re-visiting the Holy Text and the sunnah for a deeper understanding of women in the Qur'an and women in Islam. It was not until after the 1998 workshop that the group decided to have a more formal structure and set up an office to allow greater public access to its cause and its resource centre. It was then that Zainah Anwar was appointed its Executive Director to take charge of the group's activities together with Sharifah Zuriah.
In its earliest intellectual exploration into the then feminist wilderness that was Islam's primary legal sources, Amina Wadud, then lecturing at the International Islamic University Malaysia, was an invaluable resource person, not least because of her command of the Arabic language. Other resource persons who later contributed to the knowledge gathered by the members of the group included Professor Fathi Osman and Professor Abdullahi An Na'im. That the group began as a study group lent itself naturally to knowledge sharing through public talks, seminars and conferences. —Preceding unsigned comment added by As kiah8 (talk • contribs) 09:41, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
There are no sources for the Criticisms section, especially that section indicating endorsement and reference by Iranian women or Muslims abroad. Please, someone add something 60.49.156.38 (talk) 04:21, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
