Derwen Fawr

edit

I can't see Derwen Fawr becoming a significant article in its own right but it would make an interesting little addition Sketty.

Origin of the Name

edit

I have suggested in the article Sketty that the interpretation of the name offered by academics is challengeable. So what is the alternative? The common element in both ‘Sketty’ and ‘Cockett’ is ‘kett’, plausibly a corruption of ‘coed’, meaning ‘wood’ (which also appears in early sources written ‘coet’). It is significant that the ridge of high ground separating the two is Cefn Coed, though today the wood is largely gone. If correct, this would imply the village names in their respective original forms to be ‘Is-Coed’ (‘below the wood’) and ‘Uwch-Coed’ (‘above the wood’). Is there a published source for this view?
