Cross timeline link
edithttp://www.dslnorthwest.net/~danwilcox/skinners_butte.html Original Research on my part, but there are some inaccuracies on this site. For example, the cross itself lights up from inside, not from spotlights and reflectors. I didn't think this link belonged in the article since it's POV and thus not the best source, but wanted to keep track of it here. Katr67 04:19, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
photograph
editI added the photo from Eugene, Oregon which shows the view from atop the butte. One of these days, I might take some photos of the butte from its base or surrounding area.--Clipdude 05:27, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! Katr67 05:31, 30 July 2006 (UTC)
It looks like this happened, so I took away the reqphotoin tag. Power piglet 05:40, 9 December 2006 (UTC)
Revision
editI've added content (trying to not be POV motivated) from the 9th Federal Circuit (aka circus), to help with the history.
While a native of Eugene since 1959 (Born in Corvallis moved to Eugene in 1959), I have and always will have strong feelings about the fact that the cross should still be there.
Just my 6 cents worth (2 cents adjusted for inflation and the price of crude oil).

- I'd like to applaud you for adding the 9th circuit info after it was requested you stop adding POV material. Normally I would prefer to see a paraphrase of the material than the actual court case cited here (and not just because I helped write some of the previous paragraph on the matter!), but I think in this case it definitely helps maintain WP:NPOV in what is apparently still a contentious issue. The Eugene High School Remark
editThe old Eugene High School used to be located (if memory serves me right) at the corner of 18th and either Jefferson or Washington.
Then again, I think before that it was located near/across from Hayward field.
I got ahold of South Eugene HS and they told me that in 1953 it was originally Eugene High School.

- Hi, it looks like you answered your own question. :) Yes, the current South building was originally Eugene High School (the only high school in Eugene at the time), but Eugene High School had several locations before that. Also, when I went to South, I was told that it was originally designed to form the shape of an "E" from the air, but of course they had to add a back hallway, which destroyed the "E" shape, because the original design was impractical. I doubt that's true, but it makes a good story. P.S. Don't forget to sign your posts with 4 tildes, like this: ~~~~. Happy editing! Katr67 18:48, 24 September 2006 (UTC)
Name
editThe name is NOT Skinner Butte, it is Skinner's Butte. It isn't also known as, there is just one name.
Note that it was not named FOR Skinner, it was named because his homestead was on the west side of the butte and adjacent area.
If it is still wrong when I check back, I'll look up the references and make the change. 2001:470:1F04:3DF:0:0:0:2 (talk) 01:51, 17 November 2012 (UTC)
- The Knight Library at the University of Oregon has material listed under Skinner Butte and Skinner's Butte, but I think the multiple listing record should go to the Wilkins Sisters whose book, The Story of Eugene (Lane County Historical Society, 1949), does mention Skinner Butte Academy. But while the book shows Skinner Butte in the index, the text shows Skinner's Butte and even one example of Skinners' Butte. Visitor7 (talk) 09:06, 6 November 2013 (UTC)
- Most people call it Skinner’s Butte but I think the official name is Skinner Butte. I am not certain of that, but surely there is some official source somewhere? 伟思礼 (talk) 06:02, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
KKK comments inaccurate
editKKK presence in Oregon is indeed a blot on our history, but they did not put the cross up and the claim is not supported by any of the citations attached to it. Neither do they support the claim that KKK burned a cross and ”KKK” on the butte (though they probably did). A later citation says they did it on someone’s lawn. So I kept one citation and edited to better agree with what the reference actually said. 伟思礼 (talk) 06:04, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
