Is skippy a male or a female?!?!

Skippy was a female

Not a roo I'm pretty sure skippy wasn't an eastern grey kangaroo. She was far too small for that, so I guess she was some sort of wallaby. But what sort...? Here's a link to the IMDB forum in which someone from Australia suggests Skippy is wallaby... --Bmonne 09:19, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't know about that, it looks like a grey, they are alot smaller than the big red kangaroo fellas. Especially as a female. MadParrot 09:43, 14 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, what was it: a wallaby or an eastern grey? Currently the article is contradicting.

Skippy was definitely an Eastern Grey Roo -- just look at her feet and muzzle. Adult females of that species are 4-5' when standing straight up, but clearly they had Sonny standing on a box during closeups when he needed to be taller. --Jquarry 23:57, 4 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've removed the bit at the end saying she's a wallaby. Although it's not exactly scientifically conclusive, I've done a GIS and skippy in the articles pic looks more like a [Eastern Grey] than a [Wallaby] -- Slothie 13:35, 6 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I recall reading something to the effect that although the skippy character is a female, the actual roo(s?) used in the series was a male with a prosthetic pouch - something to do with female eastern greys not being the desired color - and as a result there was a few male "behavioural" problems that aren't talked about.Johnmc (talk) 07:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Firstly. I grew up in Cottage point. Waratah National Park in the 1970's. My father was the ranger and we had a pet Kangaroo. Waratah National park only had a population of perhaps 20 families within its boundary and I was the only child Sonny Hamonds age. I have been aware my whole life that the original idea for this series was more than likely based upon me, true story. I just came here to say that in the summary at the top of the page it says " various visitors to the FICTIONAL Waratah National Park in Duffys Forest, near Sydney, New South Wales". which is inaccurate. It was filmed in Duffy's forest which is located in Terry Hills on a property that runs back into the very real and NON FICTIONAL Waratah National Park. Also, reading here, Skippy was definitely an Eastern Grey and was female for the reasons cited above. There were five of them all up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shilo2010 (talkcontribs) 05:08, 12 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Pet

edit

Skippy was not the family pet. On many episodes (usually in response to some self-righteous animal libber) she was described as a wild animal, free to come and go as she pleased. --Jquarry 00:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Skippy-dvd.jpg

edit

Image:Skippy-dvd.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Clicking sounds

edit

It says "The famous clicking sounds made by Skippy are not made by real kangaroos, as is the popular American and British belief." Is there any evidence that any British or American people think this? It doesn't seem very likely to me. Also, the reason for the addition of these sounds (showing Skippy communicating or expressing herself?) should be described. Salopian (talk) 11:07, 15 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Use of elastic band to make sounds - citation required

edit

"...an elastic band around the lower jaw" was added to the article, with the edit comment add band note as per http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8512433.stm but no ref tag in the article. The elastic band doesn't get mentioned in the text of that BBC page. It might be in the video, but I can't view the video (in Australia) to check it. Could someone (perhaps in the UK) check whether the video mentions the elastic band, and if it does, add the BBC web page as a reference to the article. Mitch Ames (talk) 00:19, 25 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Having just watched the BBC video quoted in the link, the interviewees do state that they made use of elastic bands as a last resort to make Skippy's jaw move in tune with the sounds being made, as they state Kangeroos do not make that kind of noise.--Tynesider1963 (talk) 18:50, 6 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Jerry or Sonny?

edit

The character placed by Garry Pankhurst is called sonny in the article, but referred to as Jerry in the show. The Dad calls many people "sonny".--86.160.242.12 (talk) 20:33, 24 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

Garry Pankhurst's character is definitely "Sonny", since he's Ed Devereaux's...er, son. Jerry is the helicopter pilot. Wi2g 03:10, 6 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup/Later History

edit

The later history section needs to be rewritten. It seems to have been copied from a news article (without credit) and is using terms like "yesterday" outside of a quote. 212.69.51.63 (talk) 12:24, 22 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Skippy Song Lyrics - Episode 35 season 1 as performed by "The Executives" referred to in the show as "The Bushrangers"

edit

Hipperty hop, she'll stop

- the traffic when she passes by

And you'll stop and wish that you were

where she's going

Hopperty hip she'll skip

- into your heart you'll wonder why

the world is all a glimmer

and a glowy

Cute as a Koala and busy as a Bee

Happy as a Kookaburra laughing in a tree

Hipperty Hop, she's up,

she's on her way, she'll wave goodbye

Thats when you'll want the world to know

-That you love Skippy, Skippy

Skippy the Bush Kangaroo

Skippy, Skippy

Skippy our friend ever true

Skippy banned in Sweden.

edit

I've taken out the sentence about Skippy being banned in Sweden. The ref it had does not link to the fact, nor is there any ref I can find that isn't a copy of this article. Sounds more like an urban legend to me.--Dmol (talk) 06:17, 27 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Considering the fact that i WATCHED IT ON TV here in Sweden in the late 80s, on a Swedish TV-channel(channel 3 i think? I know it was before we got cable-tv at home and that i saw it when i slept over at my brothers apartment, who did have early cable-tv, and he didn't have any non-Swedish channels so that's ruled out as well), that's pretty obviously a lie, yes. American Forces Television

edit

I know that my remebering it is merely anecdotal evidence, but I know that this program(me) was a staple of American Forces Television–Europe in the early 80s. Does anyone have a published reference to this fact? Also, would those psuedo-TV GuideS distributed at the PX really count as a publication if one had them? 2600:1004:B106:67BD:FCB3:F417:994A:54E2 (talk) 22:56, 10 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

Skippy the bush Kangaroo was actually created by Lee Robinson, not John Mccallum as stated on your site, in a book McCallum wrote, he stated that Lee Robinson was in fact the creator of the hit TV series and i believe your site should indicate that If you watch “Skippy Australia’s first Superstar” you will clearly see the creator of this series was Film maker Lee Robinson. Lee Robinson and John McCallum were business partners, they both had imput into the series but ultimatly it was Robinson’s baby.

is there a published source for this information? cannot add without a source. thanks Jytdog (talk) 07:17, 9 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

Hi there, I perceived an error to do with this page and after checking the references at the bottom, noticed that my perception was correct. Lionel (Bob) Austin seems to have been left out despite being present in the key references. I have corrected it. Was this the appropriate way to correct the error? Or does this 'email' by virtue notify some administering body who would then formalise the correction? Again, he was present in all the references but seems to have been left out of the wiki page. This same thing happened for Fauana Productions the company that started and ran Skippy, however that has since been amended. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Honestfella12 (talkcontribs) 02:17, 18 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Looks like some one has flagged this as not conforming to the Wikipedia guidelines? Uncertain as to why, as it is adhering to the very sources that were cited in relation to the creation of this article. If there is a problem please declare on what grounds? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Honestfella12 (talkcontribs) 00:33, 15 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

UK transmission

edit

I think I’d have to query the assertion “Making its UK debut on 8 October 1967 on ATV” - I would say it was on ITV, of which ATV was only a regional franchisee, I would have seen it on Granada, and I also remember being very upset (I’d been looking forward to seeing it) because the first episode was postponed because of the death of former Prime Minister Clement Attlee on that day and they needed to show an obituary (which as a 9-year-old I was completely uninterested in!), and the actual debut was a week later. — Arwel Parry (talk) 20:55, 26 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

PS There has been a mysterious reversion/removal of this note, supposedly (but not) by me. Note that the link of supporting evidence for the initial UK transmission date is a website showing an extract from a TV listings magazine, however that would NOT have reflected the TV rescheduling that resulted from the death of former PM Attlee earlier that day. — Arwel Parry (talk) 18:17, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
