The result of the move request was: no consensus. Reasonable arguments from both supporters and opposers on an issue that is fairly subjective (relative to other Wikipedia titling questions), votes are roughly split. Jenks24 (talk) 06:53, 29 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Slow (disambiguation)Slow – Why is speed the PRIMARYTOPIC for "slow"? If it is, shouldn't it also be the case for fast? <<< SOME GADGET GEEK >>> (talk) 21:02, 13 November 2015 (UTC) --Relisted. sst✈(discuss) 16:01, 21 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

  • Because a "fast" is not eating, while a "slow" isn't anything. -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 05:00, 14 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. WP:Other stuff exists. As the IP stated, "fast" has two primary, equally long-term significant meanings: "fast" in regards to speed and "fast" as in fasting. "Slow" does not really have another equally long-term significant meaning, thus should remain a primary redirect to speed. Zzyzx11 (talk) 09:05, 14 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. Someone searching for "slow" is probably looking for something called "slow". Dohn joe (talk) 18:58, 14 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support: Of course the adjective meaning "of low speed" or thereabouts is the most common use of the word "slow", but what matters here is what someone wants when they look up "slow" in the encyclopedia. WP is not a dictionary and most readers know that encyclopedia article titles are nouns. The adjective is not the Primary Topic and the dab should be at the base name. PamD 05:58, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, the generic English word seems just a tad too ambiguous for slow speed to be the primary topic, as readers can also easily be referring to slow tempo or slow as in dull/dumb. --Joy [shallot] (talk) 17:46, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, per Pam and Joy. In answer to the nom, it isn't desirable to have neat matching sets of primary topics. It also isn't possible as the sets overlap. Widefox; talk 06:25, 19 November 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose - per COMMONNAME, however the redirect, as is, probably isn't the best -- as someone looking for "slow" gets thrown into a relatively technical article about speed. Perhaps a new stub page discussing slow speed would be a better target, with a further information link to the more technical article on speed. Why do I suggest slow=speed, a quick search of anything... google = speed, google images = speed, dictionary = speed... and then lets throw in something that might factor in bands, books and songs as listed on the DAB... a search of Amazon comes up primarily with Slow cooker before books, music or bands - not that I'm suggesting that is the primary topic, but rather amazon shows speed as more prominent than the other items actually called speed. Gbooks and Gnews also shows items which primarily discuss speed. Finally, moving over to pageviews, Speed comes out at 70k hits; versus all other articles named slow, which come in individually under 1k (except for Slow (Kylie Minogue song) around 3k). "Slowness"

The usage and primary topic of slowness is under discussion, see Talk:Slowness (novel) -- 70.51.44.60 (talk) 22:53, 1 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

Expanded intro to make into primary topic

edit

Based on the prior discussion regarding the rename and primary topic, would there be support for creating a layman's equivalent of Speed that relates to Slow so that it could be promoted as the primary topic. I am thinking that the vast majority of users looking for the commonname slow are not looking for the technical and scientific elements presented in Speed but rather an elementary approach. Speed is clearly the Primary topic of Speed, but is it of Slow? Perhaps a readers edition would be benefitial... An on that topic, would it be better for a stand alone article, or perhaps to simply extend the intro of this DAB into a greater discussion on the possible primary topic of Slow (speed) and then make the dab the new target for Slow. Slow (disambiguation)Slow – It's not really clear to me why the (fairly technical) article about speed would be what the average English reader would need to be navigated to when they look for slow. Sadly we don't have WikiNav for redirects, so we have to look at WikiNav for speed which shows how the slow hatnote with only 66 clicks is already in the top list of outgoing links. That is already pretty suspect. Page views for the redirect show 132 views for the same month, and in general it goes only up to 200-odd views. Not only is this tiny compared to speed, we could be looking at a ratio of 50% of people looking for slow - reaching for the hatnote. This alone would entirely invalidate the notion of primary redirect being an appropriate navigation method.
At the same time, the arguments from the previous discussion about long-term significance still apply - people looking for 'slow' could well be looking for slow as in slow tempo or slow as in dull/dumb, and these topics also have decent coverage in the encyclopedia and shouldn't be hidden from view. For the record, here's mass page views for all items listed at slow (disambiguation).
I say eight years of no consensus is enough - let's move it, and show these readers the list, with speed still at the top, and see what happens in WikiNav for the next couple of months.
Worst case we just move it back if data actually does show overwhelming interest in that single topic. --Joy (talk) 18:41, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Support per nomination. There are 28 entries (including the directly relevant ones under "See also") listed upon the Slow (disambiguation) page, with no indication that this putative primary redirect to Speed represents — as a standalone term — an expression of such significance that it overwhelms the combined notability of the remaining 27 entries. As one voter in November 2015, above, noted, "Someone searching for "slow" is probably looking for something called "slow"." —Roman Spinner (talkcontribs) 20:59, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support. There's clearly no primary topic here. Fast is a DAB page, so I don't really see why "slow" wouldn't be too. Rreagan007 (talk) 23:45, 17 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support Per others. I feel like it's a WP:NOPRIMARY situation. ᴢxᴄᴠʙɴᴍ () 04:46, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
  • Support, and also retarget Slowness to the dab page (or disambiguate separately). The absence of a primary topic is indicated by the usage data presented by Joy, while good encyclopedic sense suggests we shouldn't have primary redirects for vaguely related everyday-language terms, as the target is both too broad (not all speed is slow) and too narrow (slow can be used to characterise not only the movement in space that's covered in that article, but a number of other things, such as chemical process, heat transfer, etc.). – Uanfala (talk) 15:34, 20 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
