Need for more and better sources

edit

The current subsections in Activity are relying mostly on primary sources, and we need either to add more secondary sources to back up the info there or remove some of the claims that don't seem to be backed up by any source. WP:USEPRIMARY Yoctera (talk) 08:14, 27 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

Note for caution: different actors at the Soanes Centre

edit

The current version of the article [1] mentions Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park, Setpoint London East, and Kin Structures and Kin Studios. These different actors seem indeed linked to the Soanes Centre, but potentially with conflicting interests. The last edit made by User:DirigibleRibble indeed seems to be problematic in different ways:

  • it reads as promotion of the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetary Park, while directly copying text from the organisation's website (violating WP:Copy-paste), and failing to provide additional source to back up the activities carried out at the park.
  • it makes several claims as to the nature of Kin Structures' activity at the Soanes Centre that appear opinionated (claims that Kin Structures is 'occupying space', running 'small arts sessions', and engaging a community that is not local), without any source WP:UNSOURCED
  • it focuses on the organisations themselves (having them as subsection titles) rather than their activities with relations to the community centre, departing from the very purpose of the Activity section.
  • it was the sole edit from that user whose account seems to have been created specifically for the occasion [2]

Instead of focusing on the organisations, I suggest we put the focus on the activities they are carrying out at the centre, at least in the Activity section. And in any case, we need to rely on external sources (see the the related discussion point Need for more and better sources).

For now, I will revert the last edit for all the reasons stated above, simplify the Activity section to what is relevant to it and backed up by external sources, and move the organisations' websites to the 'External sources' section instead of primary sources in the text. The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park has used the Soanes Centre for decades and the building remains in use within their ongoing activities. This is documented with sources. CheekyPandaPop (talk) 19:23, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@CheekyPandaPop thank you for your first contribution to Wikipedia! Please note that your edit [3] makes use of a citation with a broken or restricted-access link, making it hard to verify what part of the paragraph this source is intended to support. If the source does mention the use of the Soanes centre by The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, you could maybe add a quote to make it clear for users unable to log in the cited website (see 'quote' keyword in Template:Cite web). In any case, I would encourage to add more of those sources you mentioned exist.
I am not contesting the claim that 'The Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park have used the Soanes Centre for decades' at all, or any other claim in particular. I am just reminding of some important policies and guidelines following an edit that wasn't following them in various ways. Again, 'facts' in Wikipedia are not just up to any user, but require reliable and verifiable sources to support them. Yoctera (talk) 20:38, 29 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello - yes, my first article editing - I've never really found anything I could contribute to before, but came across this one and found it a bit confusing and inaccurate, so thought I could help fix it, as I do know a bit more about this topic. Have always thought that was the point of Wikipedia, but not surprised I would break a few style rules. Not sure I completely understand all of them, so perhaps you can explain? Also, not sure if I'm even discussing this in the right way, so please do correct if that's wrong.
- The main thing that got me editing was the Friends wasn't mentioned - I volunteered with them a few years back and was trying to remember the details of it to pass on to a friend, and remembered we used the Soanes Centre at lunch. So thought it was weird they weren't on there - checked vs. their website and they do still seem to use it.
- Hadn't realised I shouldn't just copy stuff from their website though - sorry! I just thought the short paragraph helped sketch out what the cemetery park was etc., what the charity do, etc. Useful detail for the page?
- "Activity" - I don't think that original section did give a clear idea of the activites in the centre, or at the very least was ambiguous, since I read it as a list of the people in there, the dates they were in there, and then a description of what they did. Perhaps "Occupants and Their Activities" is better?
- "small", "local" - I hadn't heard of Kin, so looked at their Instagram etc. - small wasn't meant pejoratively, just that's how it looked on there; similarly, I don't really know which community is in those pictures, so didn't think to say local or otherwise...
- I found the other Kin Limited (the PLC, not the CIC, clicking around the Companies House source for the CIC - given they had their address listed at the Soanes, I assumed they were occupants of the building too.
Anyway, the whole page seems to have changed now (by someone else?), so perhaps all this is moot. Not a great first experience trying to help! DirigibleRibble (talk) 14:24, 30 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DirigibleRibble/@CheekyPandaPop it's great that you want to contribute to improving Wikipedia. A good place to start might be to explore its five pillars. I would also like to draw your attention on the WP:COI policies and guidelines. Yoctera (talk) 14:45, 3 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
