Bridge Theme/Tails' Theme

edit

Wasn't there a small Trivia note describing that the music track for the Bridge Zone was later used and remixed for Tails' theme song in Sonic Adventure, Believe in Myself? I was wondering why it was removed. Truten 22:09, 11 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

I put the copyedit tag on this because it's filled with grammar errors. I'll register and edit it in a bit. 24.117.0.218 20:05, 11 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are a few screenshots here that are from the 16 bit version instead of the 8 bit.

Their not from the 16-bit version, they are from the Master System version instead of the Game Gear port. ROSSYMILES (ロシマイルス) TALK 06:12, 15 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

40 lives?

edit

Green Hill: "The fastest time ever recorded for the first act was 20 seconds. This time scores you a massive 2 million points and of course, 40 lives for just playing the level as fast as you can." - Is there a source for this? I personally have finished it in 19 seconds, and this gives you nowhere near 2 million points, and no extra lives. Sounds specious to me. Or maybe it's Game Gear specific? I only own the Master System version. 144.132.23.73 03:58, 22 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Same gameplay as 16-bit?

edit

I don't think it's correct to say that the 8-bit version of Sonic had the same gameplay as the 16-bit equivalent. There are some major differences in the complexity of gameplay between the Genesis/Megadrive version and the Master System/Game Gear version. The most obvious difference between the two is that the 360 degree orientation of the 16-bit version has been totally ignored for the 8-bit version. On the 16-bit version, Sonic can run up walls and around loops, and his orientation changes when this occurs. On the 8-bit game, Sonic is always upright, and the level design only incorporates moderate linear slopes. This is almost certainly to reduce the complexity of the game engine and map design to a level that the 8-bit machines could handle at speed, and probably also ro reduce the number of sprites required for the Sonic character (i.e. no need for rotated walking/running animations). As far as I know, the 360 degree element of the 16-bit game never fully made it into any of the 8-bit games - admittedly Sonic 2 re-introduced the loop, but it was clearly performed as an exception to the normal game physics and for visual purposes only, whereas in 16-bit Sonic, the loop is functional through the regular game physics. Sonic Chaos incorporated curved slopes and loops in a limited way, and avoided the additional sprite problem by making Sonic/Tails curl into a ball whenever travelling on one. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.93.21.105 (talk) 13:47, 11 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

No mention of the Nintendo/Famicom version?

edit

I see no mention of sonic the hedgehog blast 5 (also known under other names) for the 8 bit nintendo listed. The game design is essentially the same as the Master System version but with a terrible color palette.

Sonic 3d Blast 5 is a pirated Sonic 16-bit, not 8-bit. Though you are right about the palette. 68.73.15.220 01:10, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

"Sonic 3D Blast 5" is a hack of Somari.--Dwedit 23:31, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Game Boy Advance Port

edit

I removed the box art for the unofficial Game Boy Advance port of the original game, since it created a lot of empty space, contributed little, and was simply the Game Gear box art with a "Game Boy Advance" sidebar tacked on. (Possibly with Microsoft Paint.)

Should the section for the Game Boy Advance port even be there? I don't believe so. It just sounds like an ad.--bic 00:41, 9 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Playing this game

edit

Hi there! Can you give me some links where I can play 8 bit Sonic The Hedgehog over the Internet? Morris Munroe 14:03, 11 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I haven't seen it on the internet, but it's on Sonic Adventure Dx, and Sonic Mega Collection (Plus). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.168.121.239 (talk) 10:29, 8 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Developed by Ancient?

edit

I've yet to find any evidence that this game was made by Ancient. It's true that Yuzo & Ayano Koshiro we're involved in the game, and Yuzo was the founding father of Ancient. However they both worked on other games such as Streets of Rage 2 which was developed by Sega. All of the copyright information and credits indicate this game was developed by Sega. I'd suggest that if Ancient did exist as a company at the time, it was involved for music production as with any other number of games. 124.191.235.123 04:44, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Actually, as you will see here, Ancient, Shout! Designworks, and H.I.C. all had their hands in programming SoR2, not Sega. As for Sonic...Upon looking at the ROM (the Master System version, in my case), you will find the following text string right at the top:
Developed By (C) 1991 Ancient - S¥Hayashi.
You will also find this:
(BANK0-4)¢SONIC THE HEDGEHOG£ Master System & Game Gear Version. '1991 (C)Ancient.

Capitalisation

edit

How should Zones and Acts be capitalised?

Green Hill Zone Act One?? Green hill zone act one?? Green Hill Zone act one?? Green Hill Zone Act one?? green hill zone act one??

JuPitEer 16:07, 3 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

They should all be capitalized, as they are in the game. You do capitalize "one", even though it was expressed as a number. --Danielh32 (talk) 23:02, 26 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

It seems someone copied and pasted an advert into this - It isn't very proffesional. Definately needs editing but something needs to replace it and i've never played this so i can't really help! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.41.78 (talk) 19:19, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Last Game for Master System?

edit

The article stipulates that "The Sega Master System version was the final title for the console released in the USA", but the article on Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (8-bit) clearly states that it was released for the Master System in 1992. I'm a bit too young/didn't follow sonic in its nativity so I don't know the specific facts here. Mtschoen (talk) 21:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

"Sampling"

edit

The article says the music from Bridge Zone was sampled in Together Again by Janet Jackson. Although the citations do claim sampling, I've listened to the song and hear no samples, just a similar melody. Presumably this is "original research". How can we "prove" a negative when a couple of sources claim the opposite? Kombucha (talk) 14:42, 5 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

@TarkusAB, don't mean to bother you, but just wanted to ask if you're still doing this? JOEBRO64 17:12, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yea yea sorry, I'm gonna try and get to it tonight or tomorrow night. Just been busy. TarkusABtalk 17:31, 30 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK everything checks out. The only comment I have is on the claim that this game has an overworld system. If I remember right, there would be a transitional screen between levels that would show how far Sonic had made it through the island, that's it, no interaction, kind of like Ghosts 'n Goblins if you've ever played that. I think of true overworlds as more interactive like Station Square, at least something you can wander around yourself. My suggestion is to omit the overworld claim, what do you think? TarkusABtalk 03:48, 31 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
Oh and also I tried to find sources that discussed "Together Again"'s similarity to Bridge Zone but couldn't find as much as I expected to find. One source said Bridge Zone inspired Together Again which sounds completely bogus. TarkusABtalk 03:48, 31 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
@TarkusAB, thanks for the review. I've struck the overworld mention (I used the word "overworld" because that was what one of the magazines called it and used the explanation IGN gave). I do still think it's a notable change from the Genesis version but won't add it back until I can come up with a better way to describe it. And yeah didn't really find anything about the resemblance "Together Again" bears to Bridge Zone. JOEBRO64 14:58, 31 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK cool, article is outstanding otherwise so an easy pass! TarkusABtalk 15:41, 31 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

"That"

edit

Re [1]; "that" is almost always unnecessary. If the sentence is clear already, it is unhelpful to add it. And this isn't just me not liking it, writing guides (like this BBC source) say it is often desirable to omit "that" where it's not needed. JOEBRO64 02:32, 18 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

"Bridge Zone" / "Believe in Myself" similarities

edit

This page says that the music for Bridge Zone "was used as a basis for Tails' theme in Sonic Adventure". I'm pretty sure this has always been just speculation? They sound similar but it's never been confirmed if this similarity was intentional. Also the source for this claim is a review of the game, and said reviewer really has no authority over the credence of this fact. I edited that section to reflect this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.62.129.150 (talk) 20:19, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Reverted. Nintendo Life is a reliable source, and judging from the music I don't think the similarities were coincidental. Furthermore, the way you worded it was original research. JOEBRO64 21:47, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I don't agree. Of course I won't deny the two tracks are similar but I don't find them similar enough to make a connection, especially not to claim the similarity as factually intentional. You say you "don't think" it's coincidental, but that's your own "original research". Nintendo Life may be reliable as a whole, but look at the relevant quote in its proper context:
Likewise, Yuzo Koshiro's original soundtrack is a timeless chiptune classic, from the familiar opening notes of Green Hill Zone to the sublime Special Stage song. Sonic's first 8-bit adventure is also the only place to hear the phenomenal Bridge Zone track — one of the most memorable melodies in the series' 22-year history, and one that fans will recognize as the basis for Tails' theme in Sonic Adventure.
Like I said before, the author Morgan Sleeper is not an authority on this fact as they're not employed by SEGA nor have any sort of contact with Jun Senoue (Sonic Adventure's composer), as far as I'm aware. The review itself has no source for this claim either. The only reliable source for this information should be Senoue himself, who has never commented on this (unless there's some interview out there). Finally you said my contribution was "original research" - what, am I supposed to find a citation for how this fact has not been officially confirmed? Otherwise how else should I have worded it? I can accept that I didn't word it the best way but I'm pretty confused on that end. 94.62.129.150 (talk) 10:09, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I attempted a compromise solution on the page. TarkusABtalk 11:01, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
