Nature of the fighting
editThis whole article is full of POV and written from the view that the "pagan" tribes are bad and the Muslims are good; the "pagans" were making Muslims' lives a misery; the Muslims were simply innocent and minding their own business; and the impression that the Muslims were resisting colonisation or conquest. However, if you look at the main source cited (Gray), one will find that the editor has cherry picked points that advances their POV and left out others that do not. For example they left out the fact that the Muslims were causing jihad and eslavement of people throughout the Senegambia, and killing innocent people who only wanted to practice their traditional religion without being converted to Islam. It also does not tell you that they behaded a baby from its own mother's back whnn they killed the father and the mother who was carrying the baby on her back ran and lay on top of her death husband in order to prevent the Muslims from decapitating her husband's body. There are many things left out from the book and from the same page they are quoting in order to advance the editor's POV. Further, this section tells us that the Jola, Serer and Sarahuli were not involved in this war whilst their main source (Gray) among other sources tells us otherwise! I'm tagging this section for neutrality and dubious but to be honest, the tag should be at the top as the article, the issue is not just this section. Further the editor does not seem to know that this article is merely discussing the beginning of the Soninke-Marabout Wars (plural). These wars did not end in 1856, and I was shocked when I came upon this article. This is merely the beginning of the wars and this should be explained in the lead so not to confuse the reader. I will be making that clarification in the lead. Senegambianamestudy (talk) 18:05, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
I feel as though the French deserve mention within the beginnings of the conflict, as seemingly the increased conflict and trade between French, anglo-africans, franco-africans and those who were non-muslim culminated in provoking the local muslim mandinka into joining up with their bretheren in the surrounding areas and attacking the soninke (non muslim mandinka) in Sédhiou in 1843 (according to George E. Brooks) BeezOutPres (talk) 15:09, 27 April 2023 (UTC)

Origins
editThe section titled "causes" is a bit broad, and the origins of the conflict in the 1840s should be explored, which I mentioned in my blurb under the nature of fighting on this talk page BeezOutPres (talk) 15:13, 27 April 2023 (UTC)
Expansion of the Topic
editHey, I think this article should be re-structured to include information on Soninke-Marabout wars more broadly. There were plenty of similar conflicts outside of the 1850-56 war in Kombo, which is only the most well-attested in the written sources. Maybe there should be an overall page similar to Fula jihads, and this page can be moved to "Soninke-Marabout War (Kombo)" or something like that, but I'm open to ideas.
