Proposed Changes
editI am a student in a Music in International Relations course, researching this topic as part of a final project. After doing my research and going back through the article, I have found many areas that could use some significant improvement. In the history section, there is neglect as to the fact that many of the Apartheid era jazz musicians came into being before the Apartheid set in, namely Sathima Bea Benjamin, Chris McGregor, Hugh Masekela, and Abdullah Ibrahim. (McGregor, Maxine. Chris Mcgregor and the Brotherhood of Breath: My Life with a South African Jazz Pioneer. Bamberger Books, 1995.)
While the apartheid created many restrictions in terms of musicians creative power and the distribution of music, jazz managed to respond in kind and actually, at the end of apartheid, began to lose its forward motion because of the change in situation that came about. (Baldauf, Scott "South African jazz after apartheid: Looking for a new direction," The Christian Science Monitor)
This article also bears no mention of one of the instrumental figures in South African Jazz, Sathima Bea Benjamin. Sathima was married to the highly influential South African jazz pianist Abdullah Ibrahim and recorded with the likes of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, helping take this music around the world. (Kelley, Robin D.G. Sathima Bea Benjamin, "Sathima Bea Benjamin." Last modified 10.6.08. http://www.sathimabeabenjamin.com/biography/biography.htm.)
Finally, this article could benefit from some links to examples of South African Jazz. One in particular, which presents some short, concise examples, is found here: http://www.soundjunction.org/jazzinsouthafrica.aspa — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kylesbakery (talk • contribs) 20:29, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Clean up
editThe article as it stands has a number of major issues. The style is often less than encyclopedic. In-line citations of WP:reliable sources are needed and the huge list is simply too unwieldy to be used and also needs sourcing.--SabreBD (talk) 18:24, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
